Box Office: ‘Novocaine’ Tops Slowest Weekend of Year With $8.7M as Moviegoers Numbed By New Offerings

Talk about a fitting plot for the movie winning what appears to be the slowest moviegoing weekend of year so far at the domestic box office, as well as one of the worst in post-COVID times.

Paramont’s action-comedy Novocaine easily topped the chart in opening to $8.7 million and had no trouble icing out Mickey 17, now in its second weekend. However, the Paramount pic had hoped to do $10 million. The movie stars Jack Quaid as a new kind of action hero who is not so great at dishing it out, but boy, can he take it — thanks to genetically feeling no harm.

In the cinematic sphere, Steven Soderbergh’s latest film, “Black Box,” and the troubled production “Mickey 17” from Warner Bros., both opened with approximately $7.5 million. However, it was Mickey 17 that experienced a steeper decline, dropping by around 60 percent.

It’s quite unusual that no single picture surpassed $10 million in earnings during a recent weekend, leading to an estimated total domestic revenue of approximately $54.7 million. To date, the revenue generated during the 2025 Super Bowl weekend has been lower, at $55.8 million.

Marvel holdover Captain America: Brave New World remained high up on the chart in its fifth weekend, coming in No. 4 with $5.5 million for a North American tally of nearly $190 million. The Mouse House notched another milestone this weekend when becoming the first studio of 2025 to see its film’s amass more than $1 billion in ticket sales.

Returning to the mix of fresh movies, “A Looney Tunes Movie: The Day the Earth Stood Still” earned $3.2 million to secure a spot in the top five domestically, while the indie film with religious undertones, titled “The Last Supper“, brought in $2.8 million afterwards.

To say exhibitors aren’t counting the days until Disney’s spring live-action event pic Snow White opens in an understatement, followed by A Minecraft Movie. Both are tracking to do solid business, with Snow White alone looking at a $50 million to $56 million domestic launch next weekend.

More to come.
