Box Office: ‘Red One’ Rounds Up $3.7M in Previews

As a seasoned gamer of both movies and real-life adventures, I must say, the release of Red One is like finding a rare, powerful artifact in my quest. The star-studded cast, the high stakes, and the holiday theme are all elements that make me feel like I’ve just discovered a hidden treasure chest!

Christmas has arrived early at the box office.

As a gamer, I can’t wait to catch Amazon MGM Studio’s holiday blockbuster, “Red One”, starring the mighty Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, which raked in an impressive $3.7 million during its Thursday previews before hitting theaters nationwide on Friday. The film will be screened across a whopping 4,032 cinemas this weekend, including Imax, Dolby Cinema, and other premium large-format screens. Can’t wait to experience the action on the big screen!

The film’s projected domestic opening is between $30 million and $35 million, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling international distribution to avoid a clash with Paramount’s “Gladiator II,” which debuts this weekend overseas, a week before its domestic release. The potential foreign earnings for “Gladiator II” could reach up to $80 million or more in its opening. Ridley Scott is the director of the original “Gladiator.

The financial success of “Red One” will be closely examined since it was produced at a cost of $250 million. Normally, such a high budget production would face intense scrutiny if its box office numbers were similar, but Amazon argues that their business strategy revolves around subscribers rather than just ticket sales. Moreover, they believe “Red One” will extend its run over the holiday season and kick-start a new film franchise.

Exhibitors are undoubtedly thrilled to debut the first major Christmas film since the pandemic, as it was last seen with the release of The Grinch in 2018. Moreover, this production boasts an impressive roster of renowned actors and actresses.

The family friendly pic follows what happens when Santa Claus — whose code name is “Red One” — is kidnapped and the North Pole’s head of security (Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Evans) in what Amazon MGM describes as a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas.

Under the guidance of director Jake Kasdan, with a screenplay by Chris Morgan and an original concept by Hiram Garcia, the movie titled Red One features an impressive cast including Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Wesley Kimmel, and J.K. Simmons. In America, it has been given a PG-13 rating, but critics’ reviews have not been particularly favorable.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of “Red One,” which marks the beginning of a string of much-awaited blockbusters scheduled for the end of the year. Fingers crossed, these films will help revive the box office after a challenging fall season that lacked substantial releases. Universal’s “Wicked” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II” are set to premiere on November 22, with Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2” following suit on November 27. These high-profile releases have been nicknamed the “Moanapocalypse” or “Glicked.
