In the anticipated sequel, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” starring Big Nick (Gerard Butler), has claimed the top spot on the box office this weekend, raking in an estimated $15.5 million within U.S. borders (according to The Numbers). Despite stiff competition from “Mufasa: The Lion King” at No. 2 with $13.2 million, director Christian Gudegast’s heist film successfully defended its position at the top. Meanwhile, the new chapter in Disney’s epic tale, “The Lion King,” surpassed the half-billion-dollar mark over the weekend, boosting its worldwide total to $539.7 million.
Despite being seven years since the first Den of Thieves release, the weekend was dominated by O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s and Butler’s reunion in the sequel. The sequel’s earnings of $15.5 million were slightly higher than the original’s initial box office take of $15.2 million in 2018. Both films in the heist series received “B+” CinemaScores, but Den of Thieves 2 outshone its predecessor on Rotten Tomatoes with a 58% Tomatometer rating compared to the original’s 41%. In other words, while both films performed similarly at the box office, critics seemed to enjoy the sequel more.
Audience members enjoyed “Den of Thieves 2” even more than professional critics, which wasn’t too unexpected. The public’s reviews for “Pantera” earned it a 78% Popcornmeter rating (previously known as the RT audience score), which was higher than the original’s 63%. Given that these figures are pointing upwards, and notably higher compared to the 2018 version, Lionsgate had plenty to be happy about. In fact, “Den of Thieves 2” became their first No. 1 film since “The Hunger Games: Songbirds & Snakes” hit theaters in November 2023.
‘Sonic 3’ Continues to Rack Up Plenty of Rings at the Box Office
Last week saw a change at the top of the box office as Den of Thieves 2: Panthera dethroned Mufasa: The Lion King. Meanwhile, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 accelerated to the No. 3 spot with an estimated $11 million. Since its release on December 20, 2024, the Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey collaboration has accumulated a global total of $384.8 million. Notably, Sonic 3 continues to outperform the final earnings of the original Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), which was $302.5 million. Additionally, Sega’s latest sequel is quickly approaching the franchise-best $405.2 million set by Sonic 2 (2022).
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Nosferatu climbed to No. 4 this past weekend, with Robert Eggers’ chilling adaptation of the timeless vampire story raking in $6.8 million. The gothic horror masterpiece starring Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård has now amassed a staggering global box office total of $135.8 million! Interestingly, Eggers’ reimagining of the Carpathian Count is outperforming all recent Dracula adaptations combined at the worldwide box office! The likes of The Last Voyage of the Demeter ($20.4 million), Renfield ($26.9 million), and Abigail ($42.6 million) have had varying reactions from both audiences and critics, but none can compete with Nosferatu’s impressive earnings at the box office.
Over the weekend, Moana 2 earned $6.5 million, landing it in the Top 5, while A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic, made $5 million and placed sixth. The period drama, The Brutalist, with Adrien Brody in the lead role, expanded its release to 68 theaters and recorded the highest per-theater average of $20,408. Interestingly, it also entered the Top 10 for the first time, earning $1.4 million. The Brutalist has been a favorite during awards season, so we can expect its popularity to grow as it becomes more widely available. Remarkably, The Brutalist’s earnings increased by an impressive 468% from last weekend, but Better Man managed to outdo it with a staggering 3,924% growth in one week!
On January 17, you can catch the premieres of One of Them Days on September 5, Wolf Man, but the cinema scene is expected to explode in 2025 with the arrival of Captain America: Brave New World starring Anthony Mackie as the former Falcon and Harrison Ford as the Red Hulk. This highly anticipated film is set to hit theaters on February 14, and box office experts predict it will earn between $86 million and $95 million over its opening weekend (Friday-Sunday), according to Deadline.
If the upcoming MCU film performs well on Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day weekend, it might surpass $100 million domestically. However, this would be a small fraction compared to the staggering $211.4 million opening of Deadpool & Wolverine in July 2024. In fact, during their second week, these two characters grossed an impressive $96.8 million at the box office. Consequently, Marvel’s “Brave New World” might not live up to its name in terms of earnings.
