Disney’s real-life adaptation of “Snow White” has had a strong debut at the U.S. box office, managing well amidst the surrounding controversy.
The preview showing of the event garnered approximately $3.5 million on Thursday, surpassing other live-action remakes such as Cinderella and Dumbo in terms of earnings (before accounting for inflation), and it’s not too far from Universal’s box office success, Kung Fu Panda 4 ($3.8 million).
The preview event brought in $3.5 million on Thursday, outpacing other live-action remakes like Cinderella and Dumbo in ticket sales (without considering inflation), and it’s close to the box office revenue of Kung Fu Panda 4 ($3.8 million).
Based on the box office earnings, it seems that the movie is highly likely to surpass $50 million domestically and potentially revive its success at the box office in the US. Worldwide, it aims for a debut of over $100 million, even with a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 46%. Interestingly, Jon Favreau’s The Lion King managed to thrive despite receiving a lower critics’ rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film Snow White, burdened with delays and debates, finally hits the screens. The production faced initial criticism over the casting of Zegler in the lead role due to her ethnicity (she is of Colombian descent). Additionally, Zegler has openly expressed her sympathy towards the Palestinian people. Furthermore, Gadot, the Israeli actor portraying the Evil Queen, has attracted attention for her comments concerning the Gaza conflict.
According to box office reports, there’s strong curiosity and enthusiasm about the film among girls, women of various ages, and families. The movie doesn’t have much immediate competition and will be able to utilize all 400 IMAX screens and many other premium large-format screens, which is great news for any film. Even executives from competing studios acknowledge that exhibitors are excited about the picture.
Compared to other Disney live-action princess adaptations, Beauty and the Beast truly stood out when it grossed $174.6 million in North America upon its release in mid-March 2017 (unadjusted for inflation). In contrast, Cinderella earned $67.9 million domestically when it premiered in spring 2015, while Maleficent debuted to a slightly higher sum of $69 million in May 2014. The sequel to Maleficent, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, unfortunately fell short with only $37 million at the domestic box office.
Among adults aged 45 and above, Snow White is quite well-known, but not as much so among younger generations. Additionally, it’s important to note that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was first released almost a century ago. On the other hand, Beauty and the Beast, which came out in 1991, has been a frequent watch for many kids at home. Lastly, Cinderella, initially shown in 1950, has consistently been a favorite among Disney princess enthusiasts.
Snow White has encountered several setbacks due to the pandemic and worker protests, but it’s being released almost everywhere except for some Middle Eastern regions during Ramadan.
More to come.
