Box Office: ‘Thunderbolts*’ to Kick Off Summer Season in Pivotal Moment for Marvel Studios

Previously, Marvel Studios had numerous successful runs at the box office. Lately, they’ve faced some rough waters. But now, they have a new opportunity to shine once more.

This week, the movie “Thunderbolts” will commence the summer’s blockbuster season, marking a crucial point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is helmed by Jake Schreier and revolves around an assemblage of unconventional outcasts – characters less famously depicted in comic books. These individuals find their hidden heroism when they team up.

*Thunderbolts refers to a group of superheroes and villains from Marvel Comics. In this context, it seems the movie is using “Thunderbolts” as the title for the upcoming film.

Predictions indicate that the upcoming movie could potentially debut domestically between $70 million and $73 million, and globally between $160 million and $175 million, against a production budget of approximately $180 million, not including marketing expenses. In pre-pandemic times, such figures for an MCU title launching in the summer might have been considered less than impressive. However, current circumstances have made tracking less reliable, and it’s important to note that the characters in this movie are not as well-known as some others from Marvel, which is owned by Disney.

Should word-of-mouth be robust, it throws everything into question. The sudden flourishing of spring blossoms at the box office, spearheaded by Ryan Coogler’s surprise hit Sinners, demonstrates that people crave the shared experience of watching a movie in a communal setting.

Recently, the year-to-date box office earnings were significantly lower compared to the same period in 2024. However, two weekends back, the revenue increased by 2%. As of now, it has surpassed that growth and is over 11% higher.

The Thunderbolts’ acting company includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan playing Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell in the role of John Walker, David Harbour taking on Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Lewis Pullman portraying Bob, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko assuming the character of Taskmaster, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus depicting CIA director Valentine Allegra de Fontaine.

According to David Rooney, the chief critic at The Hollywood Reporter, Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan head a captivatingly original and emotional Marvel journey. Although some characters and actors have been seen before in earlier installments, this fresh ensemble brings an unassuming novelty, along with something truly surprising: genuine emotion. This authenticity is thanks to a talented cast as well as the innovative vision of the creative team breathing new life into the genre.

In an interview conducted in December 2023, Russell hinted to THR that the upcoming movie “Thunderbolts” wouldn’t be your typical Marvel superhero film; instead, it appears to focus on mental health issues. Louis-Dreyfus’ antagonistic character has manipulated several outcasts and misfits from the MCU into killing each other for her own sinister purposes. However, these characters decide to band together, not as killers but as allies, in response to a prearranged setup and to help a newcomer named Bob, who develops severe mental health problems due to being subjected to brutal experiments.

At the time the article was published, the film’s rating on Rotten Tomatoes stood at an encouraging 89% positive with 98 reviews counted. Earlier in the day when the review embargo lifted, it initially showed a higher score of 92%. It is expected to change further as more reviews come in. For instance, Captain America: Brave New World, which had a rotten score of 48%, still managed to gross $88.8 million this year. Conversely, Deadpool & Wolverine, released last July, set a new record for Marvel with an opening of $211 million.

The audience rating hasn’t been determined yet for Thunderbolts, as it doesn’t start preview screenings across North America until Thursday evening, and officially opens everywhere on Friday. Internationally, it will premiere worldwide during the middle of the week, including in China.

In the previous year, Universal’s film titled “The Fall Guy” opened the summer box office during the May 1-3 weekend, earning a staggering $28.5 million.
