Box Office: ‘Twisters’ Whipping Up Huge Storm With Record $74.6M Domestic Opening

As a huge fan of Hollywood blockbusters and someone who lived through the excitement surrounding the original “Twister” film back in 1996, I couldn’t be more thrilled to witness the success of Lee Isaac Chung’s new disaster movie, “Twisters.” Growing up, I fondly remember the awe-inspiring visual effects and heart-pounding action sequences of the original film, which featured the late Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt.

Lee Isaac Chung’s movie “Twisters” is creating a storm at the box office, and experts estimate that it will earn an unexpectedly high domestic opening of around $74.6 million.

Based on current predictions, this natural disaster film could surpass the domestic box office revenue of Roland Emmerich’s “The Day After Tomorrow” (released in 2004 with a domestic intake of $68.44 million) without taking inflation into account.

Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, who lead the ensemble cast of “Twisters,” are making waves in Hollywood with their impressive performances. The trio’s star power is on the rise, as evidenced by the film’s high turnout. This success is also a significant achievement for director Chung, known for his indie hit “Minari.” The film’s audience demographics are diverse, with strong interest from both genders and various age groups. These factors contribute to the potential for a new franchise. “Twisters” received an A- CinemaScore from moviegoers.

Twenty-eight years after the groundbreaking release of “Twister” (1996), which pioneered the fusion of visual and practical effects, comes a new film titled “Twisters“. This movie starred the late Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, with direction from Jan de Bont. The original production was a massive box office success, generating $41 million in its opening weekend ($82 million adjusted for inflation) and ultimately grossing $494.5 million worldwide ($992.08 million today).

Chung filmed “Twisters” in Oklahoma, right in the thick of Tornado Alley. It’s no wonder that the movie is seeing its greatest success in regions prone to this destructive weather event; the top theater for it on Friday was even located in Oklahoma. Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment produced this feature. Domestic distribution is being handled by Universal, while Warners International manages international sales.

Over the upcoming weekend, forecasts indicated that “Twisters” would earn between $40 million and $50 million in the US box office. Some industry experts were optimistic about higher revenues, but none anticipated earnings exceeding $70 million. The film is simultaneously premiering internationally, with production costs amounting to approximately $155 million after accounting for marketing expenses.

The tornado film, “Twisters,” is expected to be a big success this weekend, bringing positive news after the disappointing performance of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” during the same timeframe last year. Last year’s movies set high expectations, but it was unlikely for this weekend to meet those standards. However, “Twisters” exceeded expectations, preventing what could have been an even worse outcome.

In other places, the fourth installment of Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me” series is in second place. Following closely is Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” and Neon’s terrifying new horror film, “Longlegs,” takes the third spot.

More to come.
