Boy Meets World’s Danielle Fishel Thinks Cory & Topangas Story Should’ve Ended Differently

As a cinephile with a heart full of nostalgia for the ’90s sitcom era, I must admit that Danielle Fishel‘s recent revelation about Cory and Topanga’s marriage in Boy Meets World has left me somewhat perplexed. Having grown up with their endearing relationship as a central part of my childhood, it is intriguing to hear her perspective on the matter.

More recently, on the Pod Meets World podcast, actors Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle had an Ask Me Anything chat with fans. When asked by a fan if there was anything she regretted about Boy Meets World, Fishel surprisingly admitted that she wouldn’t have preferred Cory and Topanga not to get married. This admission has us reconsidering the iconic couple’s happy ending.

In the TV show “Boy Meets World,” Cory Matthews’ relationship with Topanga Lawrence was a main focus. Actors Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel portrayed them as childhood sweethearts who began dating in middle school. Their bond grew and blossomed throughout the series, culminating in a heartfelt proposal by Cory in Season 5’s finale, “Graduation,” which aired in May 1998. They remained engaged for the entire sixth season before getting married in Season 7’s episode “It’s About Time.” The wedding symbolized their transition into adulthood and was a significant emotional moment for viewers.

Fishel thinks they were probably too young to get married at that stage in their lives, according to her. In the show, she felt it was the correct decision, but privately, she expressed a preference for them staying together without being married yet, as she believed it could have added more depth to the storyline. This is what she shared during the podcast when discussing her thoughts on the matter.

“From what I recall after our marriage, it felt as though there was a need to elevate our relationship, as if new challenges were introduced. However, in retrospect, I didn’t appreciate these changes.”

Reflecting on my past experiences, I recall a time when I considered proposing to my partner, but ultimately decided against it due to certain circumstances. We continued our relationship and didn’t break up, but we held off on getting married for a while. Instead of showing our union on the screen throughout the entire show, we chose to save the marriage aspect as a climax, allowing us to experience life together first without the added pressures that come with being legally wedded.

Cory & Topanga’s Marriage Worked Out, Regardless

Approximately 25 years have passed since the conclusion of “Boy Meets World,” and although Danielle Fishel initially had reservations, the storyline of Cory and Topanga’s marriage turned out to be successful in both the original series and its sequel, “Girl Meets World.” Over time, various actresses from the show have expressed apprehensions about certain plotlines. In a recent interview at 90s Con, Fishel told People that “while there are tales of it working out, I would say, in general, getting married straight out of high school is not typically ideal.”

As a movie aficionado, I’d like to point out that this scene reminds me of “Girl Meets World,” a series that ran from 2014 to 2017. It’s a spin-off focusing on the life of Cory and Topanga’s daughter, Riley, and her friends. The show mirrors the original in its thematic depth. In this tale, Cory and Topanga have been married for 15 years, and their relationship has seen its share of ups and downs, just like in the classic series.

Fishel, together with her fellow hosts Rider Strong and Will Friedle, are at present creating a documentary based on their reunion for the Pod Meets World podcast following the conclusion of Boy Meets World. This project aims to showcase the backstage events and intricate relationships among the threesome, making it quite engaging.
