Brad Pitt’s latest film, titled “F1“, is making waves at the box office with its impressive opening numbers. This sports-themed production finds Pitt in the role of Sonny Hayes, a racer who makes a comeback to the circuit following a long break. The movie is helmed by Joseph Kosinski, known for directing “Top Gun: Maverick“, and boasts an ensemble cast that includes Damson Idris as Joshua, Kerry Condon as Kate, Javier Bardem as Ruben, among others.
Warner Bros. and Apple Studios collaborated on the distribution, but it was primarily Apple who took the lead in production. The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), responsible for governing Formula One, additionally offered backing, partially through the use of race footage they already had on file.
In just ten days since its debut, the film titled “F1” has surpassed the $250 million mark globally. Earning $184.1 million internationally and $109.5 million domestically, it now stands as the first Apple Studios production to reach this milestone. Despite a minor dip of approximately 44% worldwide over the weekend, expectations are high that its success will continue to grow in the upcoming weeks.
What This Means For F1 And Apple
Apple Has Struggled In Theaters
As a devoted advocate for Apple’s cinematic ventures, I must admit that, despite pouring substantial resources into our theatrical productions, we haven’t yet experienced a blockbuster hit at the box office. However, in just ten short days, our latest release, F1, has already become Apple’s most financially successful film to date, and there’s still room for it to expand its reach. Remarkably, it has surpassed the earnings of all other Apple productions, including the much-anticipated 2024 releases like Argylle, Fly Me to the Moon, and even the critically acclaimed Wolfwalkers from 2020.
In a different phrasing: The second most financially successful Apple Original Film production was the film “Napoleon” (2023) which made $218 million at the box office despite having a production budget of $200 million. However, another division of Apple Films, Apple Films itself, can claim another box office disappointment, “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023), as its highest-grossing movie, earning $156 million with an equally large budget.
The film F1 represents a significant shift for Apple, a company which has consistently struggled to make an impact in the world of cinema. Despite pouring substantial resources into its cinematic endeavors, Apple has faced one setback after another. At this stage, the success of F1 is not yet guaranteed, given that it reportedly carries a production budget ranging from $200 to $300 million.
Our Take On F1’s Box Office Milestone
It Still Needs To Earn A Profit
In most cases, a movie needs to earn about twice its production budget to cover marketing expenses, theater cuts, and losses during international distribution. This amount may fluctuate based on existing agreements, such as Apple’s deal with the FIA, but this principle serves as a useful guideline.
In simpler terms, achieving the target for F1 means that this film must earn somewhere between $500 million and $750 million, based on its final costs. Achieving $500 million is plausible, while $750 million seems doubtful at present. However, the movie could pick up steam later on; however, its high production cost might become a concern.
The way calculus once was is no longer the same, given that streaming platforms now provide an extra income source. This movie is expected to appear on Apple TV+ within a few months, which could attract even more subscribers for Apple. Even if F1 doesn’t make money in theaters, streaming success seems imminent, and this achievement should already bring satisfaction to Apple.
