[This story contains spoilers from the season two premiere of 1923, “The Killing Season.”]
Brandon Sklenar has been on quite a journey with Spencer Dutton.
1923, resuming its second season on Sunday, follows the cross-country journeys of the older Dutton in the Taylor Sheridan-created prequel series to Yellowstone. Will Spencer be able to return to Montana to safeguard his family’s ranch from the perils that the Duttons encountered in 1923? How will he keep this commitment with Alex, his beloved wife (played by Julia Schlaepfer), now that they are apart due to vast bodies of water?

In its second season on Sunday, 1923 continues to depict the transcontinental adventures of an older Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s prequel series to Yellowstone. Can Spencer make it back to Montana to protect his family’s ranch from the challenges the Duttons faced in 1923? Given that he and his wife Alex (portrayed by Julia Schlaepfer) are currently separated by large bodies of water, how will he fulfill this promise?
Sklenar hinted at a change in tone for the second season. Unlike the first season, which was all about Spencer’s backstory, the second season is expected to reveal how he transforms from ashes into a hero. “The anguish and remorse he’s bringing into this next phase will mold him into a character we haven’t seen before,” Sklenar commented following the end of the first season.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter two years subsequent, Sklenar disclosed that creator-writer Sheridan had informed him about how the two-season narrative for ‘1923’ would conclude. Regardless of what befalls Spencer, according to Sklenar, there remains more tales set in the 1923 era of the Dutton family to tell. “It was one of the most captivating things I’ve ever read,” he remarked of the season two finale script. As of now, Paramount+ has not officially confirmed whether season two will mark the end of ‘1923’.
In this passage, Sklenar discusses upcoming events on the series “1923,” shares details about his bodily makeover for season two to perform his own stunts, expresses his fervent desire to reenact his role in a potential follow-up of the troubled “It Ends With Us” sequel, and reveals his future plans.

The previous season concluded with a massive, tear-jerking cliffhanger that left Spencer and Alex apart. As the new season begins, Spencer has two commitments: locating Alex and rescuing his family while returning to their ranch in Montana. Will he manage to fulfill both tasks?
In essence, his dedication towards those he cherishes remains constant and firm. This devotion stems from his sense of obligation to safeguard these individuals and ensure their well-being. Furthermore, it serves as a testament to the depth of his affection for them. Thus, his commitment and love can be considered indistinguishable.
1. Spencer should be approached with caution, both in terms of emotional sensitivity and physical strength, once the new season begins. Have you prepared yourself for his grueling voyage? How did you manage to slip back into your role following such an extended hiatus?
Or
2. When the new season starts, Spencer needs to be handled carefully, not only emotionally but also physically. Did you prepare for his demanding journey? How did you get back into your character after such a long gap?
Or
3. As we approach the start of the new season, it’s important to remember that Spencer is someone who shouldn’t be trifled with, in terms of both emotions and physical strength. Have you prepared for his challenging journey? How did you manage to get back into character after such a long break?
Each of these options maintains the original intent but presents it in a more natural and easy-to-read manner.
When I watched the episodes, I found myself thinking: I absolutely need to be more physically imposing this season compared to last. To achieve that, I added quite a bit of muscle mass. I then contacted Taylor [Sheridan], and said, “I think I’ll significantly increase my physical size for this season because I want to feel intimidating, fearsome, and substantial. Plus, it would make sense since he’s been laboring with coal on his ship for four months (laughs).
In addition to being two years older, this also affects my physical condition. For the stunts and challenging activities I had to perform this season, I wanted to ensure I was well-prepared, allowing me to execute them myself without any issues. Given that I have a background in martial arts, punching things isn’t new to me, and I find it enjoyable.
Did you know from the start, as Taylor Sheridan planned ‘1923’ as a two-season series, whether he had the ending in mind all along since production started?
The show may not have been confirmed for a third season yet, but when we started filming season one, I had already been informed by the creator about where the story was headed. He didn’t give me all the details, but he did share some insights. In essence, I’ve always had an idea of how the series would conclude at the end of season two.
It was intriguing to learn about the emotional and physical spaces Spencer needed to inhabit, hinting at it in season one without fully exploring it. This was like playing a game of cat-and-mouse, where you’re trying to subtly reveal what’s hidden while keeping most of it concealed for later revelation. Reading these episodes felt delightful because it allowed me to venture into exciting new places with Spencer.
How would you express the emotions you felt upon reading and filming the season 2 finale written by Sheridan, which was both grandiose and moving, whether it be for a series or a season conclusion?
Among all I’ve ever read, this was undeniably one of the most stunning pieces – absolutely. It’s not an exaggeration; others often say the same. The beauty is truly extraordinary, bordering on insane. I can’t fathom how he manages to create such masterpieces, but I will forever be indebted to him for bestowing upon me this privilege to perform this role and utter these profound words.
Does the ending open the door to continue more of 1923?
The narrative will carry on somehow, and I can’t predict how exactly. However, it’s certain that there’s still a lot more of the Dutton tale waiting to be shared, given the various Dutton spin-offs being developed.
When you were filming, were you aware of how Yellowstone the flagship series was going to end?
In my approach, I don’t ponder about what might happen in 100 years since Spencer is unaware of his family’s future actions. Instead, I focus on understanding his immediate reality and daily life. After watching the season finale, my perspective was that of a regular viewer, not directly related to Spencer Dutton.
In the finale of Yellowstone, the story returned to its roots and honored characters from the spin-offs 1923 and 1883. Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) delivered a speech that hinted at seven generations of Duttons, suggesting that Jack (Darren Mann) and Liz Dutton (Michelle Randolph) could be John Dutton’s (Costner) grandparents in the second season of 1923. However, the story starts with Alex pregnant by Spencer. This is a question we’ve been curious about, and one that you, as the cast, have also pondered. So, were your questions about who John Dutton’s grandparents are in season two of 1923 answered?
We may get an answer to that at some point this season. Yeah we may. I sure hope we do. (Laughs)

Is the path ahead for Spencer and Alex more about hope or tragedy, given that Sheridan often doesn’t provide happy conclusions in their love stories?
Everything about it is exceptional. There’s nothing particular I can point out, but everything combined makes it extraordinary. I can’t find the words to express more, but let me tell you, you will undoubtedly adore it. I have a strong feeling that everyone who watches it will be deeply touched by it. I am absolutely certain that people will appreciate the development of every character in the series. Taylor has exceeded expectations in these pages and in his writing style.
You have been very busy with 1923 and your other roles. What are you looking to take on next?
Currently, I’m working on a film titled “Housemaid,” starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, under the direction of Paul Feig. This role is quite distinct from any I’ve played before, making the experience absolutely wild. Once I wrap this up, I’ll have a brief break ahead. I’ve been at it since June without pause, which adds up to seven months! I can hardly wait to be at home, in my yard, and embrace the character of Brandon (laughs). I look forward to spending some quality time with myself, family, friends, and my beloved pet.
With a lot of changes happening around “It Ends With Us”, fans still adore the character you played. Would you be interested in playing that role again if a sequel is ever made?
Indeed, my sentiments exactly. To be frank, I’m uncertain about its current status, but let me tell you, I take immense pride in that film and the powerful message it conveys. It holds deep personal significance for me as someone very close to me has gone through a similar ordeal as Lily’s character for years. Thus, it carries a lot of weight for me. I’m overjoyed that so many people have found meaning in it too. If the opportunity arises, I would be thrilled to explore the story further.
