When you tune in to the series “1923”, it’s unlikely that thoughts of superheroes cross your mind. Yet, Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer Dutton, has drawn a parallel between his character and Batman. After binge-watching Season 1 on Paramount+ and tuning in weekly for new episodes of Season 2 on the 2025 TV schedule, I must admit that I too can recognize the similarities he’s pointing out.
With anticipation building for Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman and speculation swirling around James Gunn’s choice of a new Bruce Wayne for future DC films, Sklenar was queried about fan suggestions linking him to the role. Expressing his affection for the Dark Knight, during an interview with The Movie Podcast about 1923, he pointed out that his Dutton character shares many traits with the superhero.
It’s quite similar to the character of Spencer Dutton, and I believe I could excel in that part, given how many commonalities there are between us.
Previously, the actor from “It Ends With Us” shared that his long-held dream was to portray Bruce Wayne. He mentioned that Batman, his favorite comic book character since childhood, had always been a source of inspiration for him. When he came across fan art depicting the role, he found himself naturally imagining himself in it.
Later on, the interviewer brought up an incident from the show “1923” where Spencer engaged in a fight with several men aboard a ship. This scene seemed reminiscent of Batman’s character to him, and Sklenar concurred, expressing his thoughts in the following manner:
The interviewer spoke about a violent scene on “1923” where Spencer fought off a group of men on a boat. This reminded the interviewer of Batman, and Sklenar agreed that it was similar to the Dark Knight’s character.
In essence, while shooting Season 2, I found myself remarking that the character bore a resemblance to Batman – he’s a silent, vengeful figure with deep emotions, who is resolute about pursuing justice for himself. This archetype is quite potent, and in certain aspects, it mirrors Batman.
In a nutshell, he’s putting forward a valid argument. In Season 2 of 1923, Spencer relentlessly returns to Montana for what seems like an emotional reunion with his family, particularly his wife, Alex. So far in the first two episodes, we’ve witnessed him engaging in battles and the intensity of his brooding is at its peak as this solitary figure works round-the-clock to locate his wife and reunite with his family.

Following the wolf drama involving Kayce Dutton in Yellowstone, I had a conversation with Michelle Randolph from 1923, explaining why Elizabeth’s predicament in season 2 is crucial for her character.
Hey there, fellow cinema enthusiast! If you’re in the mood for a character wrestling with inner turmoil and driven by a powerful mission, I’d recommend catching either a Batman film or streaming the series 1923. Both share striking similarities, especially with Spencer Dutton from 1923, whose parents met an untimely end, much like Bruce Wayne. This tragic past has left Spencer battling his personal demons (though he doesn’t seem to share Batman’s fear of bats). He’s a man of self-reliance, sometimes pushing independence to its limits. And let me tell you, if anyone crosses him or harms his family, they’d better be prepared for a confrontation!
It’s worth noting that just like several actors portraying Batman, Spencer Dutton exhibits a similar demeanor – he’s often gruff, relatively quiet, introspective, and has a tendency to be brooding.
Although he may lack a mask or advanced technology, there’s no denying that Brandon Sklenar possesses the right attitude, combat skills, and troubled background to play Batman convincingly. Frankly, his performance as Spencer Dutton in “1923” serves as an impressive, emotional, and action-packed audition for the role of the Dark Knight. DC, should you be tuning in, I strongly recommend giving Brandon Sklenar a chance as your next Batman.
