As a movie critic who’s spent decades immersed in the silver screen world, I can confidently say that the upcoming reunion of the iconic ’90s slasher franchise, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” is a nostalgia-filled spectacle not to be missed. With Brandy Norwood expressing her readiness to reprise her role as Karla Wilson and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. hinting at their return as Julie James and Ray Bronson respectively, it’s like stepping back into the era of flip phones, grunge fashion, and terrifying fishermen.

Brandi Norwood expresses her readiness to step back into her character for the upcoming sequel of the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” series. Back in 1998, she was cast as Karla Wilson, a friend of Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), in the movie “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” The revamped version of this horror franchise is moving forward and is scheduled to premiere next summer, leaving ample opportunity for Norwood and other beloved stars from the series to be involved.

Recently, I chatted with MovieWeb about my upcoming role as the lead in A24’s “The Front Room,” marking my return to horror after a 25-year hiatus. Naturally, they couldn’t resist asking me about the possibility of reteaming with Jennifer Love Hewitt for the next installment of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Here’s what I had to say on that topic.

“I’ve actually been discussing the possibility of joining the cast for the latest ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’ If that happens, it’d be fantastic! After all, I didn’t meet my demise, so I guess it’s time to make a comeback!”

Norwood’s potential involvement in the project has moved swiftly: just last week, she disclosed that she hadn’t even known about a legacy sequel being developed. Given that reprising old characters is almost fundamental to the nostalgic atmosphere of a legacy sequel, this news is positive for the return of the ’90s slasher movie.

Is a Nostalgic 1990s Slasher Reunion Imminent?

In “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” Norwood’s character, Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson, and Hewitt’s Julie James managed to escape Ben Willis’ fury at the end of the movie. Unfortunately, they didn’t reappear in 2006’s “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” However, if they were to return to Southport, it would certainly bring a wave of nostalgia for fans who enjoyed the original film and ’90s slasher movies.

Prinz Jr. and Hewitt have openly expressed interest in being part of the revamp, showing great enthusiasm. Recently, Prinz Jr. mentioned that although a deal for his comeback hasn’t been finalized yet, he feels they are determined to make it happen, a sentiment he shares. Last year, Hewitt declared that she would definitely return to the series as she enjoys making those films. More recently, she confirmed that discussions about her re-entry into the franchise have also taken place.

It seems there’s a possibility that our original group could reunite. If that happens, Norwood, Hewitt, and Prinze Jr. will be added to the cast which already includes Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King for the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who was in charge of Netflix’s “Do Revenge” starring Mendes, will direct this project.

The long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is scheduled for release on July 18, 2025.

In the coming years, you can expect Norwood to star in the A24 production titled “The Front Room“, scheduled for release on September 6, 2024. This chilling tale is penned and directed by the Eggers brothers, Max and Sam, who have adapted it from Susan Hill’s 2016 short story. The horror-thriller follows a couple expecting their first child as they reluctantly welcome their ailing and estranged stepmother into their home.
