Brandy Wasn’t Aware of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot: “I Need Them to Give Me a Call”

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating the labyrinth of Hollywood rumors and plot twists, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when it comes to Brandy’s potential return to the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ franchise. It’s been over two decades since I first watched the original, back when my gaming console was still a dream and not an essential part of my life.

Brandy apparently did not know what Sony Pictures is doing next summer.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter for the promotion of Disney Channel’s latest Descendants sequel, the actor was questioned about Sony’s upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer movie remake, slated for release in theaters on July 18, 2025. Brandy expressed that she wasn’t aware of this new venture yet but would be keen to reprise her role as Karla Wilson, a character she portrayed in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

“Brandy shares with THR, ‘I wasn’t aware Sony was creating that project.’ She exclaims, ‘That sounds intriguing!'”

When queried about possibly keeping secrets regarding a potential upcoming event, Brandy clarified that she honestly wasn’t aware of the situation. She explained, “I’m not trying to deceive you. I didn’t know.”

Brandy pointed out that her character lived through the end of the movie, which was a follow-up to the 1997 horror film by Columbia Pictures titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who played main roles in both films, were discussing potential returns for the upcoming project.

Brandy stated, “They should phone me as I made it through the movie alive! I ended up battered but unharmed, ready to face whatever came next. I didn’t meet my demise in that production.”

She added, “Jennifer, Freddie, hit me up.”

Last week, it was announced that the cast for the upcoming film directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Do Revenge”) includes Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”), Madelyn Cline (“Outer Banks”), Sarah Pidgeon (“Tiny Beautiful Things”), Tyriq Withers (“Atlanta”), and Jonah Hauer-King (upcoming “The Little Mermaid”). As of now, the storyline has not been disclosed.

On Tuesday, Robinson made it clear on social media that there’s no truth to rumors suggesting her film disregards the franchise’s earlier sequels. In fact, she confirmed that “ISKWYDLS” (a reference to the 1998 follow-up) is part of the franchise’s official storyline. Some fans are now hoping this could pave the way for Brandy’s appearance in the film.

The original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” premiered on October 17, 1997, and grossed over $72 million at the box office (equivalent to approximately $142 million today). Starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe, this movie centered around a group of friends pursued by a vengeful villain with a hook, after they had attempted to conceal running over him with their car. The screenplay for this film was penned by Kevin Williamson, who is also known for writing “Scream,” and it was inspired by the 1973 novel of the same name authored by Lois Duncan.

Robinson is serving as director for the latest venture, which is based on a screenplay she collaborated on with Sam Lansky. The initial draft originated from Leah McKendrick. Once more, Neal Moritz, who previously functioned as producer in the original production, is involved in this upcoming remake.

Recently, Brandy has made a comeback to the limelight. She is set to reappear as Cinderella in “Descendants: The Rise of Red,” airing on Disney+ now and coming to the Disney Channel next month, a role she originally played in a 1997 ABC movie. Additionally, Brandy will be seen in the A24 psychological film “The Front Room,” set for release in cinemas in September. Furthermore, Ariana Grande’s modern adaptation of Brandy and Monica’s popular 1998 song “The Boy Is Mine” has been receiving airplay on the radio.

“Brandy spoke with THR about her renewed success. She’s still feeling passionate and enjoys her work. She’s simply thrilled about sharing her upcoming projects and seeing how audiences respond, as well as if they continue to find inspiration in her work.”
