As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for digital freedom and a deep understanding of geopolitics, I find this development rather alarming. Having grown up in a world where the internet has been an integral part of my social and professional life, I can’t help but feel uneasy about the Brazilian Supreme Court‘s decision to ban X, a platform that boasts 40 million users within its borders.
In response to Elon Musk’s alleged non-compliance with orders to delete specific accounts perceived as threats to its democracy, the Brazilian Supreme Court has blocked access to X within the country.
In response to violent protests in Brazil’s capital Brasília led by supporters of the former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro in January 2023, Judge Alexandre de Moraes asked Elon Musk to remove accounts propagating hate speech and extremist viewpoints on his platform.
Moraes set a deadline for Musk to assign a legal representative for X in Brazil, warning of potential restrictions. Once this deadline expired, as expected, access to the app (used by around 40 million Brazilians) was indeed blocked.
Individuals found to be utilizing a VPN to access X will face a daily penalty amounting to 50,000 reais (approximately $8,900 USD). Furthermore, the court mandated an immediate removal of X from all app stores within the country.
