Brazilian Artists Heat Up to ‘Mil Graus'

As a long-time admirer of Brazilian art, I must say that the 38th Panorama of Brazilian Art: Mil Graus exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art at São Paulo University (MAC USP) has left me absolutely “Mil Graus” impressed! The diversity and depth of the works on display are truly a testament to the rich artistic landscape of Brazil.

The 38th Exhibition of Brazilian Art titled “Mil Graus” is brought to you by the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo. This exhibition is curated by Germano Dushá and Thiago de Paula Souza, with Ariana Nuala co-curating. The title “Mil Graus (A thousand degrees)” symbolizes a ‘heat limit,’ representing transformation that occurs under intense conditions, both physically and metaphysically. This year’s showcase includes 34 artists from 16 different Brazilian states, displaying more than 130 works, with about 79 of them being newly created for this event.

Because Ibirapuera Park is undergoing renovations, where the event typically takes place, this exhibition has been temporarily moved to the Museum of Contemporary Art at São Paulo University (MAC USP). The display covers both the ground and third floors, delving into contemporary Brazilian art using five thematic threads: General Ecology, Original Territories, Tropical Lead, Body-Devices, and Trances and Crossings. These topics act as links that unite and contrast the artists’ varying approaches, according to a statement.

The Exhibition of Brazilian Art commenced in 1969 when MAM São Paulo first opened within Ibirapuera Park. Early iterations significantly influenced the museum’s modern art collection. Currently held every two years, this series fosters conversations about Brazilian art, culture, and societal matters, addressing critical contemporary topics.
