In the first season of “The Night Agent,” there was no hesitation in eliminating characters, and this trend continues in the second season. The fresh batch of actors portraying new characters makes it necessary to familiarize oneself with many new personalities. Some managed to make it through till the end, while others met their demise by the finale.
One specific character seemed to be on the path for potential forgiveness, but the acclaimed Netflix series wasn’t ready to grant him that chance. Instead, this character met a sudden and grisly end. His demise will significantly impact Season 3. And although it was unexpected, in retrospect, viewers should have anticipated it.
Who Is Solomon in ‘The Night Agent’ Season 2?
In the series, Berto Colon portrays Solomon, the first suspicious character Peter (Gabriel Basso) encounters while pursuing Warren (Teddy Sears), who’s believed to be selling confidential government secrets. When they confront him, Solomon takes a hostile stance, fatally shooting Alice (Brittany Snow) and attempting to harm Peter as well. Although Peter has never met Solomon before, he recognizes him as someone linked to the enigmatic broker. Essentially, Solomon serves multiple roles including fixer, intermediary, security, and courier.
Jacob Monroe, portrayed by Louis Herthum, is a globally connected tycoon who skillfully obtains and trades or sells crucial data to boost his influence and authority. Yet, it’s Solomon who enables him to carry out such endeavors effectively.
It’s evident that Solomon, despite appearances, doesn’t blindly align with Jacob’s actions all the time. He can be perceived as a decent individual in certain aspects, yet he found himself entangled with a questionable character. This is demonstrated when he finds it difficult to request a raise from Jacob, but at the same time, he isn’t hesitant to confront almost anyone and take drastic measures such as killing someone if they betray him. This behavior can be attributed to his past as a Marine, where he has witnessed horrific events.
The Softer Side of Solomon in ‘The Night Agent’
Even though Solomon appears to be cold-blooded and ruthless, there was still hope among fans that his character could find redemption. This possibility arises when, with Rose’s (Luciane Buchanan) assistance and her software, Peter discovers Solomon’s true identity. They learn he is presumed dead but has a living sister. So, they decide to meet her. The woman is wheelchair-bound due to a car accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She states she believes her brother is deceased, yet claims he devoted all his time, funds, and effort to helping her after the accident. It seems she manages financially through a successful homemade soap business and also benefits from his veteran’s allowance.
Eventually, it’s disclosed that his sister is aware that Solomon is still alive. When she accompanies him to the doctor due to an injury, she’s the one who motivates him to request a pay increase. She is cognizant of his profession and accepts it. However, it’s evident that she holds immense importance in his life, and he strives for her sake. This insight stirs a flicker of empathy among fans towards Solomon.
This demonstrates that Solomon’s altruistic nature is evident when we flashback to their first encounter. Solomon, finding Jacob stranded on the road, stops to lend a hand instead of waiting for a tow truck. They converse, and during their conversation, Solomon shares with his sister that the culprit who harmed her remains unidentified. When Jacob attempts to compensate Solomon for his kindness by offering money, he declines. His motive was simply to fulfill his civic duty. It’s evident that Jacob is smitten by Solomon and perceives him as an exceptional candidate for employment. He not only displays loyalty and devotion but also urgently requires funds to purchase necessary equipment to enhance his sister’s quality of life.
Afterward, Jacob writes a letter to Solomon containing a job proposal, a photograph, and information about the man responsible for hitting his sister in an accident. It appears that he is extending this invitation to Solomon to deal with the offender directly, potentially exposing him to a whole new realm of opportunities, risks, and brutality.
How Does Solomon Die in ‘The Night Agent’?
When Catherine Weaver (Amanda Warner) feigns as a prospective information vendor, Solomon initially plays along, but soon uncovers her deception. He apprehends her, yet Peter shows up just in time, and they have him subdued, ready for arrest. As Solomon is confined to a cell under Peter’s watchful eye, an idea strikes Peter. He decides to release Solomon if he guides them to Jacob. Peter aims to meet the enigmatic figure and learn more about him and his objectives. And since Solomon is the only one who can locate him, Peter considers this a valuable bargain.
While Peter converses with Jacob, Catherine, furious after learning what he’d done and attempting to intervene, pursues him. However, she is apprehended once more by Solomon. In this situation, it can be said that she’s enraged because Peter let such a monster as him escape. Solomon then forces her at gunpoint towards the car trunk, instructing her to enter.
Catherine issues a clear message to Solomon, indicating that he’s underestimating her: “You should fire your weapon immediately,” she says bluntly, “or else I’ll shove this gun so deep into you, you’ll sneeze gunpowder.” He appears unfazed, but when his defenses lower, she swiftly turns to disarm him. The gun goes off accidentally in the parking garage beneath us.
With one swift, forceful kick to the abdomen, Solomon stumbles back. A second kick sends him crashing into a pipe connected to a post. The pipe slices through his midsection, and Solomon lets out a pained gurgle, his eyes bulging. As Catherine tried to clear the ringing in her ears from the gunshot, she watched Solomon take his final breath. When Jacob later learns of Solomon’s passing via telephone call, he shows visible signs of distress. Not only did Jacob depend heavily on Solomon, but he also held a deep friendship for the man.
Berto Colon Before His Role in ‘The Night Agent’
Berto Colon has been an actor for the past two decades, but hasn’t landed his major breakthrough character yet. He’s primarily known for minor roles in TV series episodes and began with voice acting in video games like Grand Theft Auto IV as Manny Escuela. His first on-screen appearance was in two episodes of All My Children in 2008, and he also showed up in four episodes each of As the World Turns and One Life to Live, gradually working his way through soap operas.
He played minor, often unacknowledged or unnamed roles in various shows. For instance, he appeared as EMT #2 in two episodes of “Royal Pains”, a janitor in “Rescue Me”, the Hitman in “Person of Interest”, and a Guard in “The Good Wife”. His first credited roles were limited to single episodes: Paul on “White Collar” and Torres on “Blue Bloods”. He further expanded his acting portfolio with brief, easily missed guest appearances on series such as “Gossip Girl”, “Elementary”, “Nurse Jackie”, “Madam Secretary”, “Gotham”, “The Blacklist”, “Jessica Jones”, “The Tick”, “Conviction”, “Chicago P.D.”, “NCIS: New Orleans” and “When They See Us”.
Colon is best known for playing Cesar Velazquez on Orange is the New Black, where he appears in flashbacks and present-day scenes as Aleida Diaz’s (Elizabeth Rodriguez) boyfriend and Lucy Diaz’s (Adriana Camposano) father. Notably, his actions lead to both Aleida and her adult daughter Daya (Dascha Polanco) being imprisoned for their participation in his drug operation.
In a different role, he is recognized as Lorenzo Tejada in the Starz crime drama, Power Book II: Ghost, which was a spin-off from Power. Initially a recurring character, his role evolved to become main, then back to recurring, and finally a guest role over the series’ four seasons. Lately, audiences might also remember him as Castillo in two episodes of The Penguin. Now, don’t forget to catch him in The Night Agent on Netflix.
