Brett Goldstein Had A Hilariously Dramatic Reaction After Being Told To Shave His Beard For Shrinking, But I Totally Get It

As a longtime fan of Brett Goldstein‘s work, I was taken aback when I first saw him sans beard in Season 2 of Shrinking. It wasn’t just me; even he found it jarring, as he humorously recounted being told to shave his facial hair in a rather dramatic fashion.

As a devoted fan, I’m here to share some tantalizing tidbits about Shrinking Season 2! If you haven’t yet joined the ride, hop aboard with an Apple TV+ subscription, and then tune in every Wednesday on the streamer for fresh episodes. Happy viewing!

When I envision Brett Goldstein, I typically visualize him sporting a beard. Hence, it was quite surprising when Season 2 of Shrinking debuted on the 2024 TV schedule and he appeared clean-shaven. This came as a shock not only to me but also to the actor himself, as he recently recounted the amusing tale behind being instructed to shave off his beard in an unexpectedly dramatic fashion.

Brett Goldstein, known for playing Roy Kent in the cast of Ted Lasso, also collaborated with Bill Lawrence to produce another Apple TV+ series titled Shrinking. Having previously worked together on the soccer comedy, they joined forces again, this time with Jason Segel, to create a show about therapists. During Season 1, Goldstein contributed as a writer and producer rather than appearing on screen.

In the second season of “Shrinking,” a new character, Goldstein, entered the scene, portraying the drunk driver who tragically took Jimmy’s wife’s life. This role prompted him to shave his beard, an adjustment he wasn’t particularly excited about, as he expressed during an interview with CBS Mornings.

I wept. I’ve had a beard since birth, as if it was part of me from the start. They knew which side of my face to shave even before I made my first appearance. So, I removed the beard. It felt strange, like I transformed into my elderly female nephew.

I totally get where he’s coming from. Changing one’s appearance can be challenging, especially when you haven’t done it in a very long time. However (despite what the actor believes) he looks good both with and without a beard.

That didn’t quell his feelings though. When asked again about what it was like to live without his beard, he quipped back with this:

No, it’s very, very uncomfortable. Also, I discovered, sadly, that it turns out women don’t like me for my personality.

Now, clearly, he’s joking, as you can see in the full clip below, but I also imagine that this really was hard for him.

It struck me that when I saw Goldstein without a beard, it completely erased the notion of him as Roy Kent from my thoughts. This unexpected association seemed to be something Bill Lawrence had considered, since he admitted to THR that initially, he found it hard to visualize the actor fitting into the Shrinking cast due to being fixated on ‘No, Brett’s more like Roy Kent.’ However, Jason Segel advocated for the actor, and he proved correct as he delivers a fantastic performance in the role.

After providing a thorough explanation, Lawrence playfully added that requiring the Ted Lasso actor to shave for this was absolutely not up for discussion. He said it was a must.

In my opinion, there weren’t many issues that could have ended our relationship, but what really mattered to me was his decision to grow a beard. It wasn’t so much about his appearance or personality, but more about the fact that I knew it would cause him some discomfort.

Given that, Brett Goldstein’s strong response to trimming his beard becomes even clearer. Yet, it proved beneficial as the unique character he portrays differs significantly from his previous roles, and this transformation partly contributes to his remarkable performance.

In the series “Shrinking” or in “Ted Lasso,” you can observe Brett Goldstein either clean-shaven or with a beard respectively. Both these excellent shows are available for viewing on Apple TV+.
