Enthusiasts of “Bridgerton” and French literature can look forward with excitement, as the outstanding actor from Season 1, Regé-Jean Page, is collaborating with independent production company Department M on an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo.” According to a report exclusively published by Deadline, Page will not only star in the film but also produce it, together with his producing partner Emily Brown under their A Mighty Stranger banner. Moreover, writer Patrick Ness, who is known for writing “Chaos Walking” and “A Monster Calls,” is also involved in this project to bring the timeless story of revenge to the screen.
The tale “The Count of Monte Cristo” follows Edmond Dantès, a man wrongly implicated in treason, who is unjustly imprisoned at the grim Château d’If without being brought to trial. Dantès learns about a hidden fortune from fellow prisoner Abbé Faria and, upon escaping and discovering the treasure trove, he transforms himself into a prominent member of society and infiltrates the elite circle of Parisian nobility to exact vengeance on those who wrongly confined him.
In the initial season of “Bridgerton,” Page portrayed the Duke of Hastings, a role that catapulted him into international stardom due to the show’s success on Netflix. Although he has expressed he won’t reprise the character as the series moves into its fourth season, it seems this breakout part will remain significant throughout his acting career. In a recent conversation with Deadline, Page shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming project.
I entered this field driven by a passion for daring, emotional storytelling, and it forms the core of everything we produce. Collaborating with extraordinary talents, A Mighty Stranger is developing a diverse range of creative projects that offer fresh perspectives while providing pure entertainment. This is what makes us thrilled to share ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ with audiences worldwide, offering unique insights into Dumas’ masterpiece.
Indeed, it’s not uncommon for a budding star to opt for a well-known literary work when selecting their next project. Eager for details? Keep reading!
Classic Literature into Classic Movies
It’s quite a challenge to transform cherished literary classics into films and TV shows. Although Hollywood often gravitates towards well-known (and for older pieces, public domain) intellectual properties, these stories don’t always translate well onto the screen. These movies and series face an uphill battle due to fan expectations, as readers have already imagined these stories in their minds. They can also struggle with being either too familiar or not contemporary enough, or feeling like obligatory school reading. Still, aspiring creators continue to attempt innovative interpretations of significant works.
At the moment, Page shares screen time with Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett in Steven Soderbergh’s latest spy thriller titled “Black Bag.” This movie debuted over the weekend and has been praised by critics. Additionally, Department M is working on a film called “Blood On Snow,” featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Benedict Cumberbatch under the direction of Cary Joji Fukunaga.
