Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy Is A Box Office Success Globally. I Wish It Had Gone To Theaters In The US

It seems that, unlike you, I can’t find a satisfying number of romantic comedies to catch at cinemas regularly. Regrettably, I couldn’t find a single one worth watching last year, and looking ahead to 2025 doesn’t offer much optimism either. Unfortunately, Universal passed up the chance to debut the new Bridget Jones film in American theaters, opting instead for exclusive Peacock streaming access. With the impressive box office performance of this movie overseas, I can’t help but feel disappointed that it didn’t have a theatrical release first here in the U.S.

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy Is Actually Doing Great At Global Box Office

How well did “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” perform at the box office? Since its release on Valentine’s Day weekend, it has reportedly earned approximately $95.8 million worldwide. While this doesn’t place it among the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time, it is worth noting that its international earnings are comparable to those of the last blockbuster romantic comedy, “Anyone But You” from 2023, which made $132 million internationally and an additional $88 million domestically.

Even though we’ve just reached the third month of the year, Bridget Jones currently ranks as the third highest-grossing film of 2025 globally. This is ahead of Captain America: Brave New World and Dog Man, and it has even surpassed Universal’s latest monster movie, Wolf Man ($34 million), and Ke Huy Quan’s action comedy Love Hurts ($17 million). Given the enduring popularity of Bridget Jones in cinema for nearly 25 years, this isn’t surprising to me. After all, if any romantic comedy was expected to perform well at the box office, it would be a franchise like this one.

These Numbers Makes Me Wish The Movie Went To Theaters In The U.S. Before Peacock

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve recently had the pleasure of watching “Mad About The Boy.” It left me yearning to have experienced this heart-wrenching tale on the big screen, sharing the emotional journey with my mom as we shed tears together in the cinema. Initially, due to its Peacock release and the knowledge that Colin Firth’s beloved character Mark Darcy meets his end in the film, I had low expectations, fearing it might mirror the quality of the last sequel.

However, once the movie started playing at home, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it delivered a theatrical romantic comedy experience that perfectly aligned with my expectations.

I saw the film by myself, but I believe that if Universal had given more emphasis to their marketing efforts and had early reviews available, so people could hear about it sooner (it currently boasts an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes).
