In a few months, starting Valentine’s Day, the fourth installment of the beloved “Bridget Jones” movie series, titled “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” will premiere on Peacock and hit theaters worldwide. This film, which has been nine years in the making, finds Renée Zellweger returning to her unforgettable character Bridget Jones, now a single mother after the passing of Mark Darcy (portrayed by Colin Firth in previous films). Critics have weighed in, and it seems that Bridget Jones is back – though not to be mistaken with “Bridget Jones’ Baby.
The movie titled “Bridget Jones’ Baby” received an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 12 reviews. Donald Clarke from The Irish Times appreciated it with a 4/5 score and stated that the film “Mad About the Boy” had valuable insights about grief and aging, making one wonder how else the series could have concluded more satisfactorily. On the other hand, Alistair Ryder of Looper praised its fourth and best installment, saying that the “Bridget Jones” series skillfully combined romantic fantasy with a genuine examination of life after what should have been a perfect ending.
It appears not every critique of the movie has been favorable. Although Mary Kassel from Screen Rant awarded it 6 out of 10, she expressed that while Renee Zellweger was captivating, the original charm of Bridget Jones seems to be missing in this latest installment. Emma Kiely from Collider, on the other hand, gave the movie a score of 4 out of 10 and described it as an overly sweet, contrived, and unnecessary conclusion to a series that probably shouldn’t have been extended beyond its second sequel.
Is ‘Bridget Jones’ a Better Viewing Option This Weekend Than ‘Captain America?’
As a dedicated movie critic, I must say that among the Bridget Jones series, the latest installment, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” seems to be receiving the warmest critical reception, boasting a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it’s important to note that its sample pool of reviews is smaller than the other films in the franchise.
For instance, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” stands tall with an impressive 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 154 reviews, while “Bridget Jones Baby” follows closely with a commendable 78% based on 211 reviews. Given its current number of reviews, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” has yet to reach the same level of discourse as these two films.
However, if it maintains its current positive trajectory, it is likely to surpass the second film, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” which currently holds a modest 27% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 151 reviews. But remember, this is just the beginning, and as more reviews pour in, we’ll get a clearer picture of how “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” stacks up against its predecessors.
As a movie enthusiast, it seems that most discussions this weekend will revolve around “Captain America: Brave New World,” a film whose Rotten Tomatoes score is notably lower than I’d expect. Interestingly, both “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” and the Valentine’s Day release “Paddington in Peru” are outshining it.
The decision by Universal Pictures to release “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” theatrically everywhere except the United States, choosing instead to put it straight onto Peacock, feels a bit perplexing. Given the positive word of mouth and the genre of romantic comedy, it seems like a missed opportunity for counter-programming against “Captain America: Brave New World.” It’s hard not to feel that Universal Pictures could be leaving potential revenue on the table.
