At the box office, “Good Night, and Good Luck,” featuring George Clooney, shattered its own weekly earnings record, making it the top-grossing play ever on Broadway.
Last week’s performance of the production brought in a staggering $3.78 million, making it the top earner across all industries and marking the play’s first full week since its April 3 opening. This impressive figure also shattered the previous eight-performance record at the Winter Garden Theatre. The average ticket price was a steep but popular $303.40.
Last week, the production of “Othello,” featuring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, brought in the second largest box office earnings within the industry, totaling $3.1 million. At the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, each ticket was sold for an average price of $375.22. Notably, this theatre has a lower seating capacity compared to the Winter Garden.
Last week, Wicked was the third highest earning show, bringing in a total of $2.5 million. Close behind was Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bill Burr and Bob Odenkirk, which grossed $2.2 million, marking an increase of $418,624 from the previous week. This play opened on March 31 at the Palace Theatre and had an average ticket price of $211.86. Completing the top five was The Lion King, which earned $2.1 million at the Minskoff Theatre.
Multiple productions are yet to make their debut before the deadline for Tony Awards eligibility on April 27, among them is “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” which garnered $838,087 in five preview shows at the Marquis Theatre and was nearly full with a 92% attendance rate, anticipating an opening on April 22.
The play titled “John Proctor Is The Villain,” starring Sadie Sink from “Stranger Things,” premiered on April 14 to favorable critiques. Last week, the show was almost entirely sold out, with performances that offered complimentary tickets for press, and it generated a revenue of $404,807.
In summary, the total earnings across industries have increased by 19% compared to the same period last year, and they’ve risen by 24% when compared to the same week last season.
