Broadway Box Office: Nicole Scherzinger and ‘Sunset Boulevard’ Makes a Big Entrance

As a seasoned theater enthusiast who has seen more than a few shows under the Big Apple sun, I must say that the current Broadway lineup is nothing short of breathtaking! The latest additions to the roster, from Nicole Scherzinger‘s chilling performance in Sunset Boulevard to the star-studded cast of McNeal led by Robert Downey Jr., are truly a testament to the power and allure of live theater.

Last week, the hottest new show on Broadway opened its previews – it was “Sunset Boulevard,” with Nicole Scherzinger in the leading role.

Last week’s unique staging of the musical comeback, orchestrated by director Jamie Lloyd, took place solely at the St. James Theatre on September 28th. Despite being a one-time event, it managed to gross $304,934 and was completely sold out. The average ticket price for this show was an impressive $187.42, making it the highest in the industry for that particular week.

The musical based on the controversial stage and outdoor performance featuring the former Pussycat Dolls member, known for its graphic imagery, moved from London to Broadway following its initial run. This highly-anticipated production is scheduled to premiere on October 23rd.

Last week saw the commencement of performances for Romeo & Juliet, featuring Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor. This production boasted an average ticket price of $178.94 per show, making it the second most expensive theater event of the week. Directed by Sam Gold and accompanied by music from Jack Antonoff, this modern take on Shakespeare’s timeless story is generating significant interest. The play grossed approximately $441,258 across three performances, selling out its seats at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The grand opening is set for October 24th.

During the onset of autumn, another production that made its debut on Broadway was “Left on Tenth,” a play penned by Delia Ephron. This production featured Julianna Margulies and Peter Gallagher in leading roles. Over four performances at the James Earl Jones Theatre, it generated $361,709 in revenue. The theater was filled to 79% of its capacity, and the average ticket price was $107.78.

On September 30, the play “McNeal,” featuring Robert Downey Jr., debuted at the Vivian Beaumont Theater within the Lincoln Center. The earnings from the past week might have been influenced by complimentary tickets given to critics and media personnel. Despite this, the production managed to earn a substantial $1.15 million over seven performances, with an average ticket price of approximately $150.22.

Meanwhile, “Wicked” and “The Lion King” continued to dominate the box office earnings, but “The Outsiders” and “MJ The Musical” followed closely behind, completing the top five.

Cole Escola’s play “Oh Mary!” has maintained its dominance at the box office, setting a new record for the seventh consecutive week. Last week alone, it grossed an impressive $1,163,957.00, surpassing its previous week’s earnings by a mere $2,000. The play boasts the third-highest average ticket price in the industry, with each ticket going for $162.56.
