As a dedicated theater enthusiast who has been graced by the enchanting world of Broadway for decades, I can wholeheartedly say that this summer has truly been a golden era for the arts. The recent successes of Cole Escola’s masterful reinterpretation of Mary Todd Lincoln in “Oh Mary!” and the revitalized “The Wiz” have left me utterly spellbound.
Last week, Cole Escola’s show “Oh Mary!” shattered the house record at the Lyceum Theatre, earning a staggering $1.057 million and surpassing its previous record set on July 21st.
Last week, the performance featuring Escola as a fresh take on Mary Todd Lincoln was completely sold out, much like it has been for most shows. This production surpassed previous records with a box office total of $1.054 million and has now been prolonged beyond its initial limit, running until November 10th.
The closing week of “The Wiz” on Broadway was a triumphant finale, earning $1.94 million – the highest gross of its entire run – and nearly filling every seat (100% capacity). The production, with a revised script penned by Amber Ruffin, opened on Broadway on March 29 following a nationwide tour. Now, it’s gearing up to resume its North American tour in February.
The total earnings for the entertainment industry experienced a decrease of 8.6% compared to the last week, as summer comes to an end and the industry gears up for its autumn season. This season features notable productions such as “McNeal” starring Robert Downey Jr., “The Roommate” featuring Patti LuPone and Mia Farrow, and “Our Town”, starring Jim Parsons, Katie Holmes, and Zoey Deutch. Only the shows “The Wiz”, “Cabaret”, “Oh, Mary!”, “Suffs”, and “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” managed to increase their earnings compared to the previous week.
Even though numerous productions were raking in more than a million dollars, “The Lion King” reigned supreme with an impressive earnings of $2.1 million. Close behind was “Wicked,” taking in approximately $1.98 million. Next up was “The Wiz” with $1.7 million and “Hamilton” followed closely, making $1.5 million, while “Cabaret” rounded out the top five.
