Broadway Box Office: ‘Oh, Mary!’ Breaks Record, Extends Run

As a devoted theater enthusiast and follower of the latest Broadway trends, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the recent box office successes of some groundbreaking productions. Last week, Cole Escola’s innovative comedy “Oh, Mary!” shattered records at the Lyceum Theatre, raking in a whopping $1.05 million and surpassing the previous record set by “A Strange Loop.”

Last week, Cole Escola’s comedy “Oh, Mary!” shattered the Lyceum Theatre’s box office record, earning an impressive $1.05 million and surpassing the previous record set by “A Strange Loop,” this year’s best musical winner.

Last week marked the first complete run of shows for “Oh Mary!” where Escola depicts Mary Todd Lincoln as a longing cabaret artist. Due to favorable critiques and strong ticket sales, the production has been prolonged, now continuing until November 10th. Originally, it was scheduled to conclude on September 15th.

The Off-Broadway hit play, titled “A Strange Loop,”, made its debut at the Lyceum Theatre on July 11, filling its 895 seats for the past two weeks with a record-breaking attendance of over 100. Previously, this theater’s highest grossing show was “A Strange Loop” itself in January 2023, earning approximately $955,591 during its final week.

As a longtime theatergoer and critic, I have seen my fair share of musical productions come and go. But none have left me as captivated and impressed as “The Outsiders.” This year’s best musical winner is truly living up to its title, breaking box office records week after week. Last weekend alone, it brought in an astonishing $1.43 million, playing to a crowd that filled every seat and then some, reaching above 100 percent capacity. I have attended numerous performances at this theater, and I can confidently say that I have never witnessed such dedication and enthusiasm from the audience. The energy is palpable with each note, each dance move, and each spoken word. It’s a truly mesmerizing experience, one that leaves me eagerly anticipating the next performance. “The Outsiders” is more than just a musical; it’s an unforgettable journey that transcends the stage and touches the hearts of all who attend.

As a long-time Broadway enthusiast and avid follower of the revival scene, I must say that The Who’s Tommy truly outshone itself during its final week on Broadway. With an impressive earning of $1.04 million, it marked the musical’s most successful week throughout its four-month tenure at the Nederlander Theatre.

In summary, the entertainment industry experienced a 5% increase in total revenues this period. This growth can be attributed to newcomer “Job,” which debuted at the Hayes Theater on July 15 and sold out with earnings of $319,668. Notably, “The Lion King,” “Hamilton,” and “Wicked” have remained top earners in the industry’s box office.
