Last week, Othello set a new high for weekly box office earnings among Broadway plays, maintaining its position as the most profitable show in the theater industry for the second consecutive week.
During its second week of previews, the play featuring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal generated a revenue of $2.8 million and was completely sold out at the Barrymore Theatre. The cost of tickets is significantly high, averaging at approximately $338.09. This price is substantially more than the next highest ticket prices for shows like Wicked and Hamilton, which are priced at $158 each.

In its second week of previews, Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal’s play earned $2.8 million at the Barrymore Theatre, with every seat filled. The average ticket price is an expensive $338.09, surpassing the next highest prices for shows like Wicked and Hamilton, which are offered at $158 per ticket.
Even though the tickets are currently selling for less than the peak prices from the previous week, where they were going for an average of $361.90 per show, I’m eagerly waiting for its opening on March 23, directed by Kenny Leon.
Once more, Othello surpassed the previous box office leader, Wicked, which had been dominating for several months. Last week, Wicked came in second place with a gross of $2.4 million, while Hamilton earned $1.7 million, The Lion King made $1.5 million, and The Outsiders took home $1.3 million.
So far this season, we’re seeing a 18% increase compared to last year. Additionally, earnings and attendance have both risen as well – earnings are up by 5% and attendance is up by 3%. As we approach spring, Broadway is gearing up with over a dozen new shows set to debut before the Tony Awards eligibility deadline on April 27th.
The lineup features performances of “A Picture of Dorian Gray” with Sarah Snook in the lead, as well as “Glengarry Glen Ross” with Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk, and Bill Burr. Meanwhile, “Good Night and Good Luck”, starring George Clooney, is set to begin previews two days later on Wednesday.
At present, shows being previewed feature the latest musical production titled “Buena Vista Social Club.” During its third week of previews and its initial eight-show run, it generated a revenue of $773,353 and played to an audience that filled 92% of the Schoenfeld Theatre. The opening night is scheduled for March 19.
The recent Broadway transfer of the musical “Operation Mincemeat” earned a weekly gross of $606,652 over seven shows, marking a decrease from the previous fortnight’s figures. Remarkably, every performance was sold out at the Golden Theatre, and the show is set to officially open on March 20th.
