Broadway Box Office: Robert Downey Jr’s ‘McNeal’ Hits $1 Million, ‘Oh, Mary’ Breaks Box Office Record

As a seasoned theater-goer with countless shows under my belt and a pocketful of playbills to remember them by, I must say, the current Broadway scene is nothing short of breathtaking! The recent box office records set by ‘Oh Mary!’ have left me awestruck, not to mention that jaw-dropping average ticket price. It’s as if I’ve stumbled upon a golden ticket for Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory!

Last week, Mary shattered the box office record at the Lyceum Theatre an astounding six times over, raking in a whopping $1.16 million!

The Cole Escola-penned and -performed play, reinterpreting Mary Todd Lincoln’s character, has consistently sold out nearly every week since its June debut. Last week alone, it boasted the highest average ticket sales in the industry, with an average price of $162.25 per ticket. This figure surpassed popular shows like “Hamilton,” “The Outsiders” (the musical award-winner), and the new production featuring Robert Downey Jr., titled “McNeal.

McNeal,, currently in previews at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, is garnering attention among the upcoming fall shows, earning a robust $1.2 million across seven performances last week (the theater has a larger seating capacity than Oh Mary!). The play, featuring Downey as an author fixated on artificial intelligence, is scheduled to open on Sept. 30.

The revival of the play “Our Town,” featuring actors Jim Parsons, Katie Holmes, and Zoey Deutch, started previews on September 17 at the Barrymore Theatre. Over its first seven performances, it earned nearly $600,000 and was attended by audiences filling approximately 85% of the theatre’s capacity. The play is scheduled to open on October 10.

Jez Butterworth’s “The Hills of California,” which made its West End debut at the Broadhurst Theatre on September 11, generated $535,527 in its inaugural week of eight performances and filled 75% of its seating capacity. The play is scheduled to officially open on September 29.

The five most profitable shows remained dominated by “The Lion King,” “Wicked,” and “Hamilton.” “The Outsiders” and “Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen” claimed the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

On September 16th, the leading roles in the highly-ranked musical “Cabaret” were assumed by Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho, replacing Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin. Despite earning over $1 million last week, it’s important to note that the show also distributed complimentary press tickets.
