Broadway Box Office: ‘Sunset Boulevard’ Hits $1M, ‘Romeo +Juliet’ Draws Crowds

As a seasoned Broadway enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of shows, from classics like “Romeo and Juliet” to modern masterpieces like “Hamilton”. The recent previews of “Romeo + Juliet” and “Sunset Boulevard” have certainly piqued my interest.

Last week, “Romeo & Juliet,” starring Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor, along with “Sunset Boulevard,” remained among the most sought-after shows on Broadway as both productions moved forward into their second week of performances in preview mode.

The musical production titled “Sunset Boulevard,” featuring Nicole Scherzinger, generated a revenue of $1.08 million during its initial six previews in the St. James Theater. The shows ran at nearly full capacity, with an occupancy rate of 93%. The average ticket price decreased from last week’s peak of $187.42 to $118.25. The official opening night is scheduled for October 20th.

The play “Romeo & Juliet” generated approximately $950,000 during its seven previews, with attendance exceeding 100% capacity at the Circle in the Square Theatre. This theater is smaller than that of “Sunset Boulevard,” and the average ticket price stood at a high $166.71, making it the third highest in the industry for the given week. The opening night is set for October 24th.

In the lineup of fresh autumn TV series premieres, the production titled “McNeal,” featuring Robert Downey Jr., debuted at the Vivian Beaumont Theater located within New York’s Lincoln Center on September 28th. The response was mixed among critics, and over six performances, it grossed approximately $970,000, which is usually lower due to fewer shows compared to the usual seven. Each ticket cost an average of $147.61.

From Tenth Street, the new Delia Ephron play titled “Left on Tenth,” featuring Julianna Marguiles and Peter Gallagher, earned $562,408 during its eight preview shows at the James Earl Jones Theatre. The theater was filled to 69% capacity. The play officially opens on October 23rd.

Over a series of eight preliminary shows, the reprise of “Our Town,” featuring Jim Parsons, Zoey Deutch, and Katie Holmes, generated $562,408 in ticket sales. Some tickets were provided free of charge for press reviews prior to its debut at the Barrymore Theatre on October 10th.

The top-earning shows last week were “Wicked”, “The Lion King”, and “Hamilton”. Just behind them was “The Outsiders”, which saw a spike in average ticket prices to $168.18 – the highest in the industry for that period. Lastly, “Hell’s Kitchen” with Alicia Keys also made notable sales.

Simultaneously, Cole Escola’s production “Oh Mary!” is thriving, earning $1.18 million and selling out every seat at the Lyceum Theater. The average ticket price stands at a hefty $164.31.
