As a seasoned gamer of the Broadway scene with over two decades under my belt, I must say I find myself both saddened and intrigued by the impending closure of Suffs. Suffrage may not be the latest video game to captivate me, but the power of storytelling in a musical format is undeniably compelling. Shaina Taub’s brilliant work has certainly garnered attention from heavyweights like Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai, and it’s a shame that the Broadway run didn’t manage to consistently pull in the audiences required for sustainability.
The Broadway musical titled “Suffs,” which revolves around the women’s suffrage movement, has announced its closure on January 5, 2025, following approximately ten months of its run on Broadway.
The play, headlined by Shaina Taub, both performer and writer of the script and music, received support from renowned figures like Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai, serving as producers, and was honored with Tony Awards for the outstanding categories of Best Book and Score.
Despite its triumphant opening on Broadway on April 18th, the musical has experienced a steady decrease in ticket sales since it peaked at $942,785.35 during the week ending June 23rd, the week following the Tony Awards ceremony. Although it excelled in other categories and even won two awards, it fell short of winning the prestigious Best Musical award.
For many weeks, attendance has hovered between 80% and 90%, yet maintaining a Broadway show is challenging due to high operating costs, as weekly earnings typically need to approach the $1 million mark for financial stability.
A nationwide tour is set to kick off at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre in September 2025, and other locations will follow afterwards.
The musical, titled “The Show,” is predominantly a sung narrative that chronicles the struggle of women’s suffrage, with Taub acting as Alice Paul. This production, led by director Leigh Silverman, made its debut Off-Broadway at the Public Theater in April 2022.
Producers Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman expressed their honor and gratitude towards the cast and crew of the play, ‘Suffs’. Witnessing the impact on audiences as they discover the remarkable women portrayed in the production has been a powerful experience, particularly during this election year. They are delighted to have contributed to the revival of the suffragists’ struggle for voting rights, skillfully depicted by Shaina Taub’s acclaimed book and score. They eagerly anticipate bringing this captivating story to audiences nationwide.
2023-2024 season’s newest musical has now set a closing date, joining the list that includes “The Notebook,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Who’s Tommy,” and “Lempicka” which have also announced their final performances recently.
