As a gamer with a deep appreciation for the arts, particularly theater, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of loss with the passing of James Earl Jones. His name has been synonymous with Broadway for decades, and his presence on stage was nothing short of magical.
Broadway theaters will dim their lights on Sept. 26 in memory of James Earl Jones.
On September 9, at the venerable age of 93, the esteemed actor, Jones, passed away. He was a two-time recipient of the prestigious Tony Award and also honored with the 2017 special Tony Award for his lifetime achievements. In September 2022, the Cort Theatre was renamed in his honor to the James Earl Jones Theatre.
6:45 p.m. on September 26th, Broadway theaters will pay tribute to him by turning off their lights. This practice of dimming lights is a long-standing tradition on Broadway for significant community members who have passed away, but requires approval from the theater owners first.
Jones debuted on Broadway in 1957, taking on the role of an understudy for the play “The Egghead“. He earned his first Tony Award in 1969 for his performance in “The Great White Hope“, and won another Tony in 1987 for his work in “Fences“. His repertoire includes, but is not limited to, “The Iceman Cometh, Of Mice and Men, Othello, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof“, and “Driving Miss Daisy“. He was nominated for Tony Awards for his roles in the 2005 revival of “On Golden Pond” and the 2012 revival of “Gore Vidal’s The Best Man“.
His last Broadway performance was in the 2015 production of The Gin Game, opposite Cicely Tyson.
James Earl Jones was a rock-solid stalwart in the world of Broadway, offering unforgettable moments to countless theatergoers over the years. His exceptional performances earned him numerous honors, awards, and accolades across various entertainment sectors. However, we at The Broadway League are particularly proud of his impact on our stage and grateful for the lasting memories he created here,” stated Jason Laks, interim president of The Broadway League.
