As a child of the 80s, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia when I see the teaser trailer for “Hysteria!” The Satanic Panic was a fear that echoed through my own childhood, and to see it brought to life in such an intriguing way is both terrifying and exhilarating. I’ve always been a fan of shows that blend horror with humor, and the witty commentary from the creators hints at just that.
In the initial preview for Peacock’s enigmatic series titled “Hysteria”, it is revealed that monstrous entities are approaching the peaceful town of Happy Hollow. This intriguing show, set to debut in October, boasts an impressive cast including Julie Bowen from “Modern Family” and Bruce Campbell, known for his adversarial role against evil. The story unfolds during the height of the Satanic Panic in the 1980s.
For those unfamiliar, the Satanic Panic refers to a strong, short-lived concern during the Reagan era when parents suspected their children were being influenced by dark, occult powers, largely due to the rising popularity of Dungeons & Dragons. However, it was mostly unfounded fear, but it’s fascinating enough for a TV series, with D&D fans John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein serving as executive producers.
As a concerned observer of our evolving society, I can’t help but echo the sentiments shared by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David A. Goodman (The Orville). Each generation seems to face its unique brand of fear, and the children of one era often become the source of worry for the next. The kids of the Atomic Age, with their rebellious spirit, caused a stir in the 60s with their counterculture movement. Fast forward to today, those very ‘free spirits’ voted for Reagan and advocated for censorship of the music their children admired. Now, these grown-ups find themselves criticizing modern trends like pronoun usage, TikTok, and a movie about Barbie. It’s an endless cycle that feels eerily reminiscent of someone, or something, watching it all unfold with amusement.
The theme of “Hysteria!” encompasses the dual aspects of a generational fear: the exhilaration of youthfulness, defiance, and dreams, as well as the terror of maturity when one realizes that the world they once knew has altered drastically. We aspire for parents and their children (of suitable age) to share the thrills, laughter, music, and essence of “Hysteria!” collectively. Navigating through adolescence can be terrifying; so can parenthood.
