Enthusiasts of the iconic TV show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” are abuzz this week following the announcement that the classic series is being revived on streaming platform Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar set to return as Buffy Summers. However, it seems that one of its key characters might be absent: Angel. Played by David Boreanaz, Angel is a tormented vampire with a soul who forms a romantic connection with Buffy until his exit at the end of Season 3. Yet, he made occasional appearances while leading his own spin-off series.
Earlier this week, Gellar shared a detailed message on Instagram about her role in the upcoming reboot, stating, “‘Fans have longed to revisit Buffy and her universe, but I could only do so if I was confident we would get it right.’” Among the numerous enthusiastic comments welcoming the return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one from Boreanaz, who congratulated Gellar, but based on his words, it seems he won’t be participating in the reboot with her.
I’m thrilled about your adventure! Cherish each moment along the way, and remember to keep sharing your experiences with your supporters. Good luck and safe travels!
It appears that Boreanaz might be expressing good wishes towards Gellar as she embarks on a new adventure, but it’s unclear if he will join her at this time. However, since the project is still in its early stages and there have been no recent announcements about his other commitments, there’s a possibility that Boreanaz could potentially reprise his role in Buffy should the opportunity arise.
Can a ‘Buffy the Vampire’ Reboot Work Without Angel?
Given that the debut episode of the new version of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is being helmed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao from a script penned by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, it seems all systems are go for a promising venture likely to secure a series order on Hulu. However, since Boreanaz doesn’t seem keen to reprise his role as Angel, the question arises: Is it possible to pull off a successful Buffy reboot without Angel?
To understand who might be a better fit for Buffy in the reboot, one needs only to examine the original series’ subsequent seasons after Angel left at the end of Season 3. Following his departure, Spike (played by James Marsters) rose to prominence, confessing his feelings for the Slayer over the course of four more successful seasons. Despite their volatile relationship at times, many viewers felt that Spike was a better match for Buffy than Angel was. In other words, if James Marsters is absent from the reboot, fans may feel let down, although a brief appearance by Boreanaz would be a welcome bonus, but not essential to our overall satisfaction with the reboot.
Keep an eye out for updates regarding the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot, and we’ll share information about potential cast members. For now, don’t miss the chance to watch all seven seasons of the original series, which are currently streaming on Hulu or available for free on Tubi.
