David Boreanaz recently posted on Instagram to mark the 28th anniversary of the iconic series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer“, first aired on March 10, 1997. It’s amazing how time flies, and it’s almost unbelievable that this groundbreaking show is nearing its 30th year. Excitingly, a sequel series is in the works!
Buffy initially aired on The WB and was inspired by a 1992 movie sharing the same title, penned by Joss Whedon. Sarah Michelle Gellar assumed the lead character of Buffy Summers, who is a young Vampire Slayer from an illustrious lineage. Guided by Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head, a Watcher), she also relies on her friends, collectively known as the “Scooby Gang,” in her battles against evil forces. What set this show apart from other teen series was its exceptional writing, storytelling, acting, and more.
The series was an enormous success, airing for seven consecutive seasons until its conclusion in May 2003. Despite ceasing television production, it lived on as a comic book series that remained canonical. It catapulted Gellar, Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Seth Green (Oz), James Marsters (Spike), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), and the late Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn Summers) to stardom. Additionally, Boreanaz’s spinoff “Angel” enjoyed success, premiering on October 5, 1999 and running for five seasons.
Even though “Buffy” hasn’t been on television for close to 22 years, it remains a charming series. It boasts an impressive 85% critical approval and 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The fact that new generations of viewers are discovering it is a significant factor in its return.
The ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Sequel Series is Coming
Regardless of your feelings, it’s true that the beloved series Buffy is making a comeback, but with a twist – instead of being a full-fledged reboot, it will be a sequel. Hulu has commissioned a pilot for this show, and Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to return, although not as the main character. Rumors suggest that the series will revolve around a new Slayer whom Buffy will guide. As Buffy concluded, Willow, her best friend and witch, had cast a spell allowing Slayers to harness their full powers. This means that Buffy is no longer the sole Slayer. The upcoming series is said to delve into this expanded universe, but as of now, there’s no word on when it will premiere.
So far, no other original cast members have been confirmed for a return, but Juliet Landau (Drusilla) has expressed her desire to rejoin the show. As for Boreanaz, his latest Instagram post seems to suggest that he won’t be participating in the new series, as he wished Gellar and the team good luck instead.
Gellar made a promise to fans that the show was in good hands:
I believe our team is truly exceptional, with Chloé Zhao, the Zucks [Nora and Lilla Zuckerman], and Gail Berman on board. I anticipate that people will be genuinely impressed. The word ‘overwhelming’ doesn’t quite capture it; instead, it feels heartening, thrilling, and nerve-wracking all at once because we want to make sure we execute it perfectly.
