After being absent from TV screens for two decades, it seems that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” could make a comeback. According to recent news, Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to reclaim her character, Buffy Summers, in a fresh interpretation of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Unlike a complete remake, the upcoming Hulu pilot is actually a continuation of the storyline from the 1997-2003 series. Gellar will also be involved behind the scenes as an executive producer.
According to reports, award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao has been confirmed as the director for an upcoming pilot. Notably, Zhao, who previously directed Marvel’s Eternals, holds a first-look deal with Searchlight TV and 20th Television, the production companies responsible for this pilot based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Incidentally, Zhao openly admits to being a fan of the original series. The script for the pilot was penned by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, renowned for their work in Poker Face. Joining Zhao, Nora, and Lilla as executive producers are Sarah Michelle Gellar, along with the original series’ executive producers, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, and Kaz Kuzui. Additionally, Dolly Parton, who was a producer on the original series through her company Sandollar, also serves as an executive producer for this Hulu production of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer pilot.
As a passionate fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I’m eagerly waiting to see if any of the original cast might reprise their roles in this upcoming project. The creators haven’t revealed much yet, but it seems that the possibility is still on the table. However, it’s important to note that Joss Whedon, the original creator, won’t be involved in the pilot and has taken a break from work since 2021 following numerous allegations of inappropriate conduct during filming on Buffy, Angel, and Justice League sets. Despite being just a pilot for now, the prospect of this iconic series making a comeback with an Oscar-winning director at the helm has fans like me buzzing with excitement!
