Bungie Teases the Return of Iconic Marathon Weapon Ahead of Gameplay Reveal

On April 12, Marathon will unveil its complete gameplay. To build anticipation among fans, Bungie is gradually hinting at the weapons that will appear in the game, providing a sneak peek of what appears to be a reappearing WSTE-M5.

The WSTE-M5 Combat Shotgun is among the best shotguns in gaming, comparable to Doom’s Super Shotgun and Gears of War’s Gnasher. It’s a potent, twin-barreled weapon designed for close combat, making you feel invincible, almost overpoweringly so that it seems impossible to defeat.

Initially appearing in Marathon 2, it swiftly gained favor among fans due to its powerful punch and distinctive, sleek appearance that was easy to recognize. This is what made the M5 a community favorite.

In the Bungie 30th Anniversary update, the creators unveiled the Wastelander M5 shotgun, a tribute to the original WSTE-M5, which eventually made its appearance in Destiny 2.

For Bungie, it’s crucial that their comeback resonates effectively during an extremely challenging time for the company. The acquisition by Sony hasn’t shielded them from significant job cuts and Destiny 2 has faced steep declines, even after the successful Final Shape expansion. Players have expressed disappointment due to slow content releases and are hanging on to hope that Codename: Frontiers will mark a new beginning for the looter-shooter genre.

In simpler terms, the upcoming marathon is designed with a greater emphasis on player-versus-player (PvP) interactions. However, it’s important to note that it doesn’t aim to directly compete with Destiny 2. Instead, given the nature of live-service games, players might find themselves needing to balance their time among several such titles.

Joe Ziegler currently holds the position of Game Director. Previously, he worked as a Game Director for Riot Games on Valorant. With his leadership, Bungie may gain a unique point of view, which could potentially revitalize a project that appears to be lacking direction, such as Marathon.

As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement about what Bungie might unveil regarding Marathon on April 12! While it’s hoped that we’ll get to play this game in the same year, it’s important to remember that unexpected delays could crop up, especially given the history of complications associated with this project.
