Burt Reynolds gained prominence in Hollywood with a compelling dramatic role in the 1972 suspenseful movie “Deliverance.” His charisma and attractiveness were highlighted further through films such as “Hooper,” “The Longest Yard,” “Smokey and the Bandit,” and “Starting Over” during the rest of the decade. These movies not only entertained audiences but also earned critical acclaim, solidifying Reynolds’ status as a beloved actor who excelled in both action and comedy genres.
By the early 1980s, Burt Reynolds’ reputation as a popular box-office draw, which had earned him the top spot for five straight years between 1978 and 1982, started to lose its charm. The poorly received collaboration with Clint Eastwood in the 1984 action film “City Heat” signified a turning point in his career that he could never recover from, losing his previous stardom. In the late 1980s, Reynolds made a less-than-glorious comeback to television, where his acting career had originated in the early 1960s.
Reynolds’ professional fall persisted through the 1990s, culminating in him being chosen to play adult filmmaker Jack Horner in Paul Thomas Anderson’s second directorial project, the 1997 drama movie “Boogie Nights.” His remarkable acting in “Boogie Nights” generated some of the finest reviews of his career and earned him a nomination for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award.
Though Reynolds was heavily anticipated to win the Oscar, he unfortunately lost to Robin Williams in the 1997 drama film “Good Will Hunting”. The slow-clap reaction that followed the announcement of Williams’ victory couldn’t conceal Reynolds’ palpable disappointment, a feeling akin to a once-dominant Hollywood star realizing victory had slipped through his fingers at the last moment.
Burt Reynolds Seemed Certain To Win an Oscar for ‘Boogie Nights‘
On February 10, 1998, during the announcement of nominations for the 70th Academy Awards, Burt Reynolds received his first and only Oscar nomination. At that moment, he was considered the most likely winner in the Best Supporting Actor category, competing against Robert Forster from “Jackie Brown”, Anthony Hopkins from “Amistad”, Greg Kinnear from “As Good as It Gets”, and Robin Williams who ultimately won for “Good Will Hunting”.
It’s widely agreed that Reynolds was almost certain to win the Oscar, having won most of the pre-Oscar awards such as a Golden Globe. However, his victory was challenged by Williams’ powerful performance in “Good Will Hunting,” which remained in wide release up until the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony. Although the cinematic run for “Boogie Nights” had ended by late November 1997, “Good Will Hunting” was still being shown in theaters when it came time for the awards.
In comparison to “Boogie Nights,” which received excellent critical acclaim (94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 89% from audiences), but only managed moderate commercial success with a global box office revenue of approximately $43 million, “Good Will Hunting” significantly outperformed in terms of box office earnings. With an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 94% audience approval, “Good Will Hunting” garnered over $225 million at the worldwide box office.
Reynolds Hated ‘Boogie Nights’ and Paul Thomas Anderson
Burt Reynolds’ chances of winning an Oscar for his role in Boogie Nights were hindered by his clear dislike for the movie, particularly its director and writer, Paul Thomas Anderson. Instead of showing appreciation towards Anderson and Boogie Nights for reviving Reynolds’ flagging career, he harbored a disdain for the film, allegedly never watching it completely before his passing in 2018 at the age of 82.
It appears that Reynolds openly expressed disapproval towards Anderson, primarily due to Anderson’s perceived arrogance and experience, the handling of pornography in Boogie Nights, which was portrayed as a symbol of loneliness for the film’s troubled characters, and their personal differences. Despite Reynolds’ repeated criticisms of Anderson, Anderson extended an offer to Reynolds for a role in Magnolia, his third directorial project released in 1999. However, this offer was declined by Reynolds, who cited their contrasting personalities and Reynolds’ intense dislike of Boogie Nights as the reasons for his refusal.
‘Boogie Nights’ Gave Reynolds a Short-Lived Comeback
Although Boogie Nights rejuvenated Burt Reynolds’ career by providing him with consistent work for the next ten years, he did not secure the high-profile roles that he had previously declined. Notably, he refused the role of astronaut Garrett Breedlove, which earned Jack Nicholson an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the 1983 comedy-drama film Terms of Endearment.
In the past two decades of his professional journey, the most distinguished role that came to Sam Elliott (Reynolds) was portraying George Spahn, a real-life ranch owner whose property housed the Manson family, in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. Sadly, he passed away before shooting his scenes for Tarantino, who had named himself after Elliott’s character Quint Asper from the TV Western series “Gunsmoke”. This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of several unfulfilled opportunities throughout his career.
Certainly, an Academy Award might have enhanced the variety of roles offered to Reynolds during his later years. Moreover, it could have provided a clearer perspective on his complex legacy, which has been influenced by his self-destructive behaviors as acknowledged by him. On a side note, if you’re interested, you can rent “Boogie Nights” on Apple TV and Prime Video.
