As a voracious reader with a penchant for contemporary literature that captures the essence of modern love stories, I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming BBC drama based on Caleb Azumah Nelson‘s award-winning debut novel, “Open Water.
A fresh dramatic production by the BBC, inspired by Caleb Azumah Nelson’s acclaimed first book “Open Water“, is currently being developed.
Azumah Nelson takes on multiple roles, including lead writer, director, and executive producer, in an upcoming eight-part series destined for BBC iPlayer and BBC One. This production is a joint venture between Mam Tor Productions (a Banijay U.K. company) and B-Side Productions.
Open Water revolves around Marcus, a retail worker aspiring to be a photographer, and Effie, a dance student at Dublin’s university. The instant they encounter each other, they sense an unspoken, powerful bond. However, Marcus discovers that Effie is involved with his friend Samuel. This situation presents a boundary that Marcus is not comfortable crossing.
A summary describes: “A collaborative endeavor, capturing and chronicling creative individuals of African descent in London, brings these individuals together, yet will their blossoming camaraderie withstand the allure of attraction?
Working with Mam Tor, B-Side, and the BBC has been an absolute pleasure as we bring Open Water to life on screen,” Azumah Nelson stated. “I’m eager for viewers to get acquainted with Marcus and Effie, but more importantly, to delve into their world: their personal lives, their communities, their passions. I feel truly fortunate to have the opportunity to share this story at this moment in time.
Tally Garner, in her role as executive producer at Mam Tor Productions, expressed: “Caleb Azumah Nelson’s deeply moving and essential love story, Open Water, is truly extraordinary. I am thrilled to be collaborating with Lindsay Salt, Rebecca Ferguson, Danielle Scott-Haughton at the BBC, and Matimba Kabalika at B-Side. These partners perfectly embody the essence of our project.
The production of “Open Water” was initiated by Lindsay Salt, who is the Director of BBC Drama. The company Banijay Rights will take care of distributing it worldwide.
