After Cameron Diaz retired from acting in 2014, people assumed they wouldn’t see her on screen again. However, this changed when it was revealed in 2022 that she would be making a comeback for director Seth Gordon’s film “Back in Action“. In this Netflix hit, Diaz appears alongside Jamie Foxx, portraying a married couple who were once CIA agents and are forced to return to duty when their identities are exposed. Interestingly, it took quite a bit of money to convince Diaz to come out of retirement for this project.
As a cinephile immersed in the world of streaming, I stumbled upon an intriguing Bloomberg expose that delved into Netflix’s unique production approach. It was reportedly disclosed that Diaz was offered a whopping $45 million for starring in two movies with Netflix – a figure agreed upon by the former film chief, Scott Stuber, prior to Dan Lin taking over in 2024. The report suggested that despite Stuber’s initial reluctance to spend such an enormous sum on Diaz, it was the price required to lure her out of retirement.
In 2014, Diaz chose to retreat from public attention to prioritize her family and personal growth. When she talked to The Hollywood Reporter last year, the topic of finances was absent. Instead, she expressed that her decision to resume acting was simply a matter of the timing being right for her family.
In a challenging situation, my husband encouraged me by reminding me of all the efforts I’ve made for our family. He emphasized that it was now my turn to shine and pursue my aspirations. He said, “I’ve seen what you can do; let me see you do it.” So, with his support, I was ready to take on the challenge.
Was Cameron Diaz Worth the Money?
Without a shadow of a doubt, during the 2000s, Diaz undeniably had more successes than failures in her acting career, with movies such as Shrek, Vanilla Sky, and The Holiday bringing in substantial box office earnings. However, it’s a different story now, and given that she hasn’t acted for a decade, the question arises: Was Diaz still worth the investment?
Given the poor 23% critical rating from Rotten Tomatoes for the film “Back in Action,” some might argue that it’s not worth watching. Critics have been harsh, claiming it lacks fresh ideas and generally finds it forgettable. However, its audience score of 62% suggests a somewhat more positive reception. Still, many viewers seem to agree that it doesn’t offer much in the way of originality, instead relying heavily on its lead actors rather than an engaging storyline. In his review for MovieWeb, Matt Mahler stated, “I don’t believe it’s particularly good, but it is what it is.
From my perspective, it’s clear that “Back in Action” has been leading the Netflix Top 10 movies chart since its release on January 17. Whether critics approve or not, it seems many people are tuning in, which translates to revenue for Netflix, whether from new subscribers or viewers watching ads on their entry-level membership tier. However, whether this popularity will cover the cost of salary paid to Diaz remains uncertain, as Netflix keeps financial details of their original productions under wraps.
Despite some reservations about the quality of the film, it’s delightful to see Diaz back on our screens in “Back in Action”. She’ll make her acting comeback again in 2026, reprising her role as Princess Fiona in “Shrek 5”, and keep an eye out for her in the forthcoming Apple TV+ black comedy “Outcome” alongside Keanu Reeves, Jonah Hill, Matt Bomer, and Laverne Cox.
