Camila Cabello Gives Angsty “June Gloom” Performance at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards

As a longtime fan who’s followed Camila Cabello‘s journey since her days with Fifth Harmony, I must say that her 2024 VMA performance of “June Gloom” was nothing short of mesmerizing. The visual aesthetics, the raw emotion, and the shocking finale left me on the edge of my seat. It felt like we were witnessing a pivotal moment in her life, a testament to her growth as an artist.

At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards held at the UBS Arena on Long Island, Camila Cabello sang “June Gloom” from her latest album titled C,XOXO, which was broadcast live.

The pop star’s show began with a video displaying her blonde image from this album phase on a laptop screen. As the camera pulled back, Cabello, now brunette, was seen singing inside a transparent cage from within, facing the camera while being accompanied by masked dancers and flashing lights. In an unexpected twist, Cabello broke the laptop and stepped out of the enclosure. Her backup dancers removed their masks before gathering around her, ending the act with a pose.

As a gamer, I’ve been wondering if “June Gloom” by Cabello could be about her breakup with Shawn Mendes. The lyrics, “How come you’re just so much better? Is this gonna end ever?” and “The truth is, honey, you’re all I think about,” hint at a deep emotional connection that seems to have been lost. The line, “I guess I’ll fuck around and find out” suggests exploration and uncertainty, possibly in the aftermath of their split. It’s all speculation, but it sure sounds like a heartfelt ballad about love and loss.

At this year’s VMAs, Mendes unveiled the song “Nobody Knows,” which seems to be about the conclusion of his intermittent relationship with Cabello. Much like in “June Gloom,” Mendes expresses his disillusionment over a romance he realizes isn’t beneficial for him in the new track. The lyrics go: “When you’re so in love/And your souls connect/But it’s still not enough/Where does it go?/Nobody knows.

This is the third time Cabello has graced the VMAs stage. Her first appearance was at the 2019 event, where she teamed up with Mendes for their smash hit “Señorita”. She also took to the stage at the 2021 VMAs. This year, Cabello received two VMA nominations but didn’t take home any awards.
