Can blockchain address AI’s transparency issues?

As a researcher with a background in both artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology, I have spent countless hours exploring the intersections between these two fields. My personal experience has shown me that while AI is revolutionizing industries by enhancing data processing and decision-making capabilities, its increasing complexity raises valid concerns about transparency, trust, and fairness.

Artificially intelligent technologies are transforming numerous industries by expanding our capacity to handle and make superior judgments based on data. Yet, as these AI systems advance in complexity, their inner workings can become harder to comprehend, leading to apprehensions regarding clarity, reliability, and impartiality.

Many people are concerned about the opaque workings of most AI systems, which they refer to as “black boxes,” leading them to question the sources and accuracy of AI-produced results. To address this issue, there has been a push for technologies like Explainable AI (XAI), designed to make AI processes more transparent. However, these solutions have not yet fully succeeded in shedding light on AI’s intricacies.

As the complexities of artificial intelligence (AI) advance, so does the importance of reliable methods to guarantee that these systems function not just efficiently but also honestly and impartially. Enter blockchain technology, renowned for its significant contribution in bolstering security and transparency through decentralized data management.

The capabilities of blockchain go beyond securing financial transactions; it can also add a layer of verifiability to AI processes that were once hard to ensure. This feature is essential for tackling long-standing issues in AI, such as maintaining data accuracy and tracking decision-making processes. Consequently, the integration of blockchain into AI systems is crucial for creating transparent and dependable AI solutions.

In an interview with crypto.news, Chris Feng, the COO of Chainbase, shared his perspectives on the topic. He pointed out that even though blockchain integration doesn’t address every aspect of AI transparency in a direct manner, it significantly improves several key areas.

Can blockchain technology actually enhance transparency in AI systems?

Deep learning models based on blockchain technology do not address the fundamental issue of making AI explanations clear and understandable. It’s essential to recognize the differences between interpretability and transparency. The root cause of the unexplained behavior in AI models stems from their black-box character, which is deeply rooted in complex neural networks. Although we can follow the inference process, we still cannot comprehend the meaning behind each parameter’s contribution.

As a researcher exploring the differences between blockchain technology and IBM’s Explainable AI (XAI) in terms of enhancing transparency, I would ask:

In the realm of Explainable AI (XAI), several techniques are used to comprehend the workings of models, such as uncertainty metrics or examining model outputs and gradients. However, integrating blockchain technology does not modify how AI models reason internally or learn. Yet, it significantly boosts the transparency of training data, methods, and causal connections. For example, blockchain technology makes it possible to trace data used for model development and allows community involvement in decision-making. All this information can be securely logged on the blockchain, enhancing the transparency of both AI models’ creation and inference processes.

Given the widespread concern over bias in artificial intelligence systems, how well does blockchain technology address this issue by guaranteeing the authenticity and unaltered nature of data during the entire AI development process?

Blockchain technology has proven effective in securing and supplying training data for artificial intelligence (AI) systems. By using a network of distributed nodes, confidentiality and security are enhanced. For instance, Bittensor implements a decentralized approach for AI model training, distributing data among various nodes while employing algorithms to ensure honesty within the network. This increases the robustness of distributed AI model training. Furthermore, protecting user data during inference is crucial. Ritual is an example of this, encrypting data before sending it to off-chain nodes for computation of inference results.

Are there any limitations to this approach?

A significant challenge is addressing model bias derived from training data. This refers to the often overlooked issue of biased predictions from AI models based on factors like gender or race, which can arise from the data used for training. At present, neither blockchain technologies nor techniques for debiasing AI models are particularly effective at uncovering and correcting these biases through transparency or specialized methods.

Do you think blockchain can enhance the transparency of AI model validation and testing phases?

Companies such as Bittensor, Ritual, and Santiment are harnessing the power of blockchain technology to link smart contracts on the blockchain with external computing resources. This synergy allows for on-chain data analysis, maintaining full transparency over all involved data, models, and computational resources, thereby significantly increasing overall process transparency.

“Which consensus mechanisms do you believe are most effective for validating artificial intelligence (AI) decisions within blockchain networks?”

I strongly believe in combining Proof of Stake (PoS) and Proof of Authority (PoA) techniques for optimal blockchain performance. While traditional distributed computing can function with intermittent resources, Artificial Intelligence (AI) training and inference require uninterrupted access to consistent and dependable GPU resources. To ensure trustworthiness and reliability of these nodes, it’s crucial to validate their effectiveness. At present, most reliable computing resources are found in large-scale data centers rather than consumer-grade GPUs that may fall short when providing AI services on the blockchain.

Moving forward, which inventive methods or progressions in blockchain technology do you think will be essential for addressing the present transparency issues in AI, and what potential impact could they have on the future trust and accountability landscape within AI?

In my current perspective, I identify several complexities in implementing AI solutions on blockchain technology. These include dealing with model fairness and data, as well as utilizing the blockchain’s capabilities to prevent and counteract black-box attacks. To encourage community involvement in enhancing model interpretability and increasing AI transparency, I am investigating methods for incentivization. Furthermore, I ponder how a blockchain infrastructure could contribute to transforming AI into a universally beneficial resource. Public goods are characterized by their openness, societal advantages, and serving the collective interest. However, many existing AI technologies fall between the stages of research prototypes and marketed products. By establishing a blockchain network that rewards and distributes value, we may accelerate the democratization, accessibility, and decentralization of AI. This strategy could potentially lead to greater accountability and bolster trust in AI systems.
