  • Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone Exit, Explained

As a devoted fan who has followed Yellowstone from its inception, I must admit that the news of Kevin Costner’s departure left me feeling like a cowboy who lost his trusty steed. The show has been my go-to Western drama fix, and John Dutton’s character, played masterfully by Costner, has been the beating heart of this expansive tale.

The popular Western series Yellowstone on Paramount Network is set to come back with the second part of its 5th (and potentially 6th) season, slated for a comeback in November 2024. With the departure of lead actor Kevin Costner, fans are curious about how the show will continue. The story revolves around John Dutton, an influential rancher portrayed by Costner, and his family’s enduring legacy that spans multiple generations across the different prequels and spin-offs within the TV series franchise.

Additionally, Costner’s charisma significantly enhances Yellowstone’s cinematic quality compared to most TV series, and his absence might diminish interest in the remaining six episodes unless they provide a fitting end to John Dutton’s storyline. Given that Paramount is developing another spin-off called The Madison featuring Michelle Pfeiffer in contemporary Montana, it’s intriguing to consider how Yellowstone will conclude without Costner at the helm.

Following four seasons of portraying patriarch John Dutton on Yellowstone from 2018 to 2022, Paramount revealed in May 2023 that Kevin Costner was set to leave the show. This announcement occurred five months after the first half of Season 5 ended, with Costner’s final episode airing in “A Knife and No Coin.” In this episode, John is left speechless when his daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) proposes that her adopted brother Jamie (Wes Bentley), known for his violent behavior, should be eliminated.

Fans of Yellowstone were left without a definitive ending for John Dutton in the mid-season 5 finale, prompting speculation that Costner would return for the remaining six episodes to offer closure for the Dutton patriarch. However, five months later, it was confirmed that Costner had left the show to dedicate his time to his expensive film project Horizon, which underperformed at the box office, with its first installment earning only $34 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $100 million (as reported by Box Office Mojo). Consequently, Horizon was withdrawn from theaters, and the release date for its sequel was postponed from August.

As I bid farewell to the gripping world of Yellowstone to take on the challenge of Horizon, it’s becoming increasingly clear in hindsight that this might not have been the wisest decision. The Paramount series would struggle immensely to pull off the concluding episodes without my presence, even if the finale surpasses all expectations. In fact, without me at the helm, there’s a strong possibility that Yellowstone will experience a significant ratings dip.

Can Yellowstone Survive Without Costner?

After not providing a compelling ending for John Dutton on Yellowstone, the show has started to lose credibility among its audience. If they couldn’t effectively resolve the main character’s storyline, it’s difficult to believe that they will deliver satisfying conclusions for other characters as well. Although there is still some suspense surrounding Jamie’s situation at the train station, which is symbolic of the Dutton family’s secret burial ground, many fans have stopped watching due to Costner’s unexpected departure from Yellowstone.

Considering Kevin Costner’s departure and the conclusion of Yellowstone’s final six episodes, it’s worth exploring the other spin-offs. In today’s competitive entertainment landscape, fans have a wealth of choices with the completion of the series arc in 1883, the upcoming second season of 1923, and the anticipated premiere of 6666 on Paramount+ sometime in late 2024 (possibly later). Additionally, there’s The Madison, a new Yellowstone installment that modernizes the Western drama set in Montana.

It would be one thing if the final events of Yellowstone bear serious consequences for the spin-offs mentioned above. However, the timeline of the family’s reign is already convoluted due to the jumps back and forth between the decades along the American frontier. As such, there is no real dramatic reason to watch Yellowstone‘s final frames, especially without star Kevin Costner there to guide viewers to the finish line in a compelling fashion that resolves the most important Dutton family member’s fate. Yellowstone is streaming on Peacock.
