As a seasoned action movie enthusiast with a soft spot for Kate Beckinsale and a deep appreciation for the late Ray Stevenson, I am beyond excited about the upcoming release of “Canary Black”. Having followed both actors’ careers since their breakout roles in “Underworld” and “Punisher: War Zone”, respectively, it feels like a reunion of sorts.
Pierre Morel, the director who made a blockbuster action film that turned Oscar nominee Liam Neeson into a real-life action hero, is back in the genre with the new trailer for the Amazon Prime Video action thriller. If the director of the Taken films isn’t enough to get you excited, maybe the cast will do the trick: it includes stars like Michael Sheen from Underworld and Hitman: Agent 47, as well as the late Ray Stevenson, who was famously known for his role as The Punisher in War Zone.

Under the direction of Pierre Morel and penned by Matthew Kennedy, the film Canary Black seems tailor-made for an intense, action-packed spy thriller without any frills. Kate Beckinsale headlines the movie as a fugitive CIA agent, with Rupert Friend, Ray Stevenson, Saffron Burrows (known for her role in The Bank Job), Ben Miles (from Andor), Goran Kostić (famous for his work in Taken), Michael Brandon (recognized from Episodes), and Charles Nishikawa (a star of Touch) rounding out the impressive cast. For a sneak peek, you can watch the trailer for Canary Black, followed by its official synopsis below.
A prominent CIA agent named Avery Graves finds herself in a dire situation when terrorists abduct her husband. To save him, she’s forced to compromise her country’s secrets. Isolated from her team, she seeks aid from her shady connections in the underworld. Constantly double-crossed, she relies on her advanced skills and raw combat abilities in a perilous struggle to deliver a ransom that could ignite an international catastrophe.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t hide my excitement about the upcoming project, especially since it will be under the visionary direction of Pierre Morel, with the exceptional Kate Beckinsale leading the cast. Back when the project was first announced, Producer John Zois couldn’t contain his enthusiasm, expressing that Anton is ecstatic to team up the action maestro, Pierre Morel, with the trailblazer who redefined the action hero in the Underworld series, Kate Beckinsale. Both of them continue to elevate their craft and push the boundaries of the genre today.
Canary Black Is One of Ray Stevenson’s Final Roles
Ray Stevenson, who tragically passed away on May 21, 2023 at the age of 58, is remembered by “Canary Black”. His death was due to long-standing heart issues, a fact revealed later by his partner, Elisabetta Carracia. Known for his memorable roles as Frank Castle in “Punisher: War Zone”, Volstagg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Thor” films, the television series “Rome”, the crime drama “Kill the Irishman”, the action franchise “Accident Man”, and many more, Stevenson recently garnered praise for his portrayal of the beloved ex-Jedi in the Star Wars series “Ahsoka”.
In his last film appearance, he is set to share screen time with Jeremy Neumark Jones, Neil Stuke, Bold Choimbol, Genevieve Chenneour, Michael Ironside, Eric Roberts, and David Schofield in the historical action movie titled “1242: Gateway to the West“. This production is helmed by director Péter Soós and jointly penned by Aron Horvath and Joan Lane. The story of “1242: Gateway to the West” transports viewers to a time when Genghis Khan’s forces launched an attack on Europe. Interestingly, the invading army underestimates the power of a Hungarian castle, a canon, and a Priest who stand against them.
