Cannes 2025: All We Imagine As Light’s director Payal Kapadia returns to prestigious film festival; this time in special role

This year, Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia graced the Cannes Film Festival once more with her presence. Back in 2024 when she made history at the festival, she is now part of a new chapter as a member of the jury for this esteemed event’s 78th edition. Joining other global artists on the official jury panel, Kapadia was present at the grand opening ceremony held in Cannes, France, where she walked down the red carpet and posed for photos. Alongside her, renowned jury members such as Juliette Binoche were also present.

At the festival, Payal Kapadia, dressed in a blue blouse and red asymmetrical skirt designed by Payal Khandwala, was among an esteemed group of jurors that included Halle Berry, Alba Rohrwacher, Carlos Reygadas, Leila Slimani, Jeremy Strong, Hong Sang-soo, Dieudo Hamadi, and others.

This year’s event marks a significant return for Kapadia, who made history at Cannes in 2024 by winning the Grand Prix for her debut feature film All We Imagine As Light. This Malayalam-Hindi co-production between India and France was the first Indian movie to compete in the Cannes Competition section in 30 years.

Kapadia’s inclusion on the jury underscores her growing influence in global cinema, and it brings a sense of pride to Indian filmmakers as it signifies international recognition. As part of the jury, she will help select the winners for this year’s Competition category, which features 21 films. The Palme d’Or, the top honor, will be announced at the festival’s closing ceremony on May 24, 2025.

The Cannes Film Festival is a major global platform for filmmakers, actors, and artists. Being selected for the jury is a notable achievement, and Kapadia’s inclusion demonstrates the progress of Indian cinema on the world stage.

Returning to Cannes not only honors her accomplishments but also paves the way for more Indian talent to make an impact globally. The 78th Cannes Film Festival, held from May 13 to May 24, 2025, will see French actress Juliette Binoche presiding over the main competition as jury president.
