Known for his quirky comedies and children’s films like “RRRrrrr!!!” (2004), “Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra “, (2002) and “Houba! On the Trail of the Marsupilami” (2012), Chabat will present an unexpected film at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20th.

The organizers of Directors’ Fortnight announced on Tuesday that Alain Chabat frequently explores a type of mainstream cinema by renowned directors, which blends absurdity, juvenile humor, and fantastical realms suitable for the most imaginative audience. Intrigued by the prospect of seeing more auteur comedies, they’ve granted Chabat free reign to choose an unexpected film to be unveiled during the festival. After the screening, there will be a talk with Alain Chabat where he’ll share his favorite comedies that have influenced him and his work.

The last movie Chabat directed was the family-friendly holiday comedy “Christmas and Co” in 2017. He’s completed filming for the upcoming Netflix animated mini-series “Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight.” In 2002, Chabat directed the live-action adaptation of “Asterix & Obelix,” with Christian Clavier as Asterix and Gérard Depardieu as Obelix. This film grossed over $128 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing version among all adaptations – both live-action and animated – of the famous comic books.

This year, Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo’s French drama titled “Enzo” will kick off Directors’ Fortnight on May 14th, while Eva Victor’s Sundance hit movie “Sorry, Baby” will conclude the event on May 24th.
