Alice Rohrwacher, a renowned Italian director and screenwriter known for her works “La Chimera” and “Heavenly Body”, has been selected to head the jury of the Caméra d’or (Golden Camera) award in Cannes. This prestigious honor is given annually to the standout first feature film shown in either the Critics’ Week or the Directors’ Fortnight sections of the festival.
At the conclusion of the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 24 (Saturday), the festival organizers will honor director Rohrwacher, whose exquisite work has flourished in Cannes, by acknowledging his filmmaker debut during the closing ceremony.
Or,
During the closing ceremony of the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 24 (Saturday), Rohrwacher, who has seen his delicate work thrive at Cannes, will be recognized for making his directorial debut by the festival organizers.
Both versions convey the same message in a more conversational and easier-to-read manner.
In the previous year, the recognition was bestowed upon Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel for his work, “Armand”, that debuted in the Un Certain Regard segment of the Cannes Film Festival.
Rohrwacher noted that first experiences are significant and tend to linger in our memories forever. They’re similar to stepping into an unknown room, sharing your first kiss with someone you love, or setting foot on a new land. There seems to be a special, radiant quality that surrounds these moments in our recollections. Could this be the reason why the most distinguished award for debut films is named Caméra d’or?
In her debut film, “Heavenly Body” (or “Corpo Celeste”), shown at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2011, Rohrwacher delved into a relationship with the world filled with discoveries and new beginnings through the depiction of a 13-year-old girl. According to Cannes officials, her second feature, “The Wonders” (or “Le meraviglie”), was chosen for competition at the 2014 Cannes Festival and won the Grand Prix. This intimate story portrays the everyday lives of young sisters living on a remote farm, as they are impacted by the arrival of a reality show production.
The movie titled “Happy as Lazzaro” (originally known as “Lazzaro felice”), which tells the story of a man who is suddenly liberated from a landowner who had peasants bound by serfdom, was showcased in the Cannes competition back in 2018 and shared the award for best screenplay.
Acclaimed French actress and Academy Award-winner Juliette Binoche will serve as the president of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival jury, overseeing the selection of films vying for the prestigious Palme d’Or award.
This year’s Cannes festival runs May 13-24.
