At the renowned Cannes Film Festival, Sound of Falling, the second film by 41-year-old German director Mascha Schilinski, made its world debut on Wednesday afternoon at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. The movie is competing in the festival, and it received a heartfelt four-minute standing ovation from the audience.
Written collaboratively with Louise Peter, this German-language play narrates the stories of four women – Alma (portrayed by Hanna Heckt), Erika (Lea Drinda), Angelika (Lena Urzendowsky) and Lenka (Laeni Geiseler) – who reside at various times throughout a century on the same rural farm in northern Germany.
In this manner, the text maintains its original meaning while presenting it in an engaging and easy-to-understand format.
Titled originally as “The Doctor Says I’ll Be Alright, But I’m Feelin’ Blue“, this two-and-a-half hour movie was created over a 34-day filming period. It hasn’t found distribution in the U.S. yet, but there’s reportedly high interest from leading distributors.
The review from The Hollywood Reporter praises the movie “Sound of Falling” as something uniquely different, leaving you pondering the essence of what a film can truly be. They also refer to it as an engrossing account and a cinematic ode, comparing it to Terrence Malick’s 2011 Palme d’Or winner and Oscar-nominated “The Tree of Life.” However, they suggest that this film is reminiscent of Malick’s style, but with influences from Jane Campion and Michael Haneke as well.
