Cannes Fest Draws Unusually High Number of Emmy Hopefuls

It’s traditionally been smart for Emmy contenders to attend the Cannes Film Festival since (a) it happens in mid-May and (b) Emmy nominations voting starts in mid-June. Plus, Cannes is a major gathering spot for the entertainment industry and media. However, this year seems to have attracted more attendees than ever before.

They have come — or will be coming — for a wide variety of reasons.

On the opening night of May 13th, Robert De Niro, who’s often hesitant to be in the limelight but is a strong contender for the best actor award in a limited series or TV movie on Netflix’s “Zero Day”, arrived to receive an honorary Palme d’Or. The following day, he attended a discussion about his career.

As a gamer, I was thrilled to step into Cannes for just a day, representing the talented cast of the non-competitive film “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which debuted on May 14th. That’s right, it was none other than Tramell Tillman from Apple TV+’s “Severance” gracing the prestigious Cannes Film Festival!

On May 16th, it’s anticipated that Natalie Portman, an Oscar winner and potential best actress in a limited or anthology series or TV movie for Apple TV+’s “Lady in the Lake,” will attend the premiere of “Arco,” an animated feature similar to “Flow.” She has lent her voice to a character in this film and also serves as its producer.

On the very same evening, Bono from U2 will gracefully attend a unique viewing of Apple TV+’s production titled “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” directed by Andrew Dominik. This work is a creative adaptation of Bono’s critically acclaimed one-man stage show, and it qualifies for the category of best variety special (pre-recorded).

The renowned French actress, Charlotte Gainsbourg – who happens to be the daughter of singer Serge Gainsbourg and actress Jane Birkin – and a nominee for best actress in a comedy series on Amazon’s “Étoile”, is set to travel from Paris in May to receive a special recognition connected to her work on that show.

That night as well, Sissy Spacek, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and is nominated in that category for FX’s “Dying for Sex”, will attend the premiere of her competition/sales title “Die, My Love”. In this movie, she portrays the role of Jennifer Lawrence’s mother.

Tonight as a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I, being the star of Hulu’s “La Máquina,” will grace the red carpet at the premiere of the intriguing flick, “Magellan.” In this captivating tale, I step into the shoes of the legendary Portuguese explorer, Fernando Magellan. This cinematic masterpiece is slated to screen in the Cannes Premieres section. Can’t wait to see the reactions from the audience!

The Million Dollar Heist, will be participating as the host of amfAR’s fundraising event during Cannes, which takes place at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc two nights before the festival ends.

Could attending the Cannes festival influence over 20,000 members of the TV Academy? It’s impossible to predict with certainty, but given the potential benefits, it seems unlikely that someone would decline such an opportunity.
