Cannes: Neon Picks Up Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve-Starrer ‘Fjord’

Neon has acquired distribution rights for North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand for the English-language premiere of Cristian Mungiu, a Palme d’Or winner from Romania (known for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”), starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Neon intends to release the movie in cinemas across the U.S.

The reuniting of Stan and Reinsve, who previously acted together in “A Different Man“, centers around a family drama involving the Gheorghiu family, consisting of a Romanian father (Stan) and a Norwegian mother (Reinsve). They decide to move their household to a secluded village in Norway, where they soon develop a strong relationship with the neighboring Halberg family. However, as disturbing accusations emerge, the Gheorghius become embroiled in a local investigation.

Stan recently received an Academy Award nomination for his exceptional performance portraying Donald Trump in Ali Abbasi’s film, “The Apprentice,” and is set to return to his role as Bucky in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming project, “Thunderbolts.

The film, titled “Fjord,” has recently completed its production in Norway. Goodfellas is responsible for global distribution. This project is among the most anticipated films at this year’s Cannes Film Market. Sarah Colvin from Neon and Eva Diederix for Goodfellas were involved in sealing the deal.

Movie director Mungiu is a frequent attendee at Cannes and has earned several of its highest accolades. He’s won the Palme d’Or for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” best director for “Graduation,” and best screenplay for “Beyond the Hills.

Following the success of Sean Baker’s Oscar-winning film “Anora,” which also earned the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year, Neon has several films from this year’s festival selection on its schedule. These include Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” Julia Ducournau’s “Alpha,” Raoul Peck’s “Orwell: 2+2=5,” and Michael Angelo Covino’s “Splitsville.

Stan is managed by the agencies Brookside Artists Management, CAA, Sloan Offer Weber, and Relevant. On the other hand, Reinsve is represented by CAA and Narrative.
