Capcom Reportedly Files a New Dino Crisis Trademark in Japan

A recent trademark application by Capcom for Dino Crisis in Japan could appear hopeful, but past experiences advise us to be cautious and not set our expectations too high.

Following its registration on March 4, 2025 (as Gematsu noted), and its unveiling on March 11, the trademark has sparked fresh rumors about whether the company might be reviving their survival horror classic or if it’s merely a strategic move to safeguard intellectual property without any actual game in development.

If you’ve been with us from the start, the prospect of a comeback for Dino Crisis is exhilarating! This franchise debuted back in 1999, captivating players with its tense environment, survival aspects, and terrifying dinosaur adversaries that sent shivers down their spines.

Following the release of Dino Crisis 3 in 2003 and its shift in direction that was not well-received by fans, Capcom largely stopped working on the franchise. Despite ongoing interest from gamers, particularly in fan surveys where Dino Crisis often ranked high among desired comebacks, Capcom has yet to express any plans for a potential new installment.

In the world of gaming, it’s quite typical for companies like Capcom to renew their trademarks on franchises such as Dino Crisis to maintain legal ownership rather than suggesting a new game is imminent. However, despite Capcom renewing the Dino Crisis trademark in 2019, no new project related to it has been announced so far.

Intriguingly, certain experts in the field believe that Japan’s trademark regulations add a unique twist, since companies usually can’t resubmit applications without a clear intention to utilize the intellectual property. However, it remains unclear whether the strategy involves launching a complete game, enhancing an existing collection, or just re-releasing digitally.

As a die-hard fan, it’s absolutely thrilling to hear that Dino Crisis has resurfaced in Capcom’s internal chats! A poll they conducted earlier showed a massive interest in bringing back this legendary series, and with their recent projects hinting at a newfound appreciation for classic IPs, it feels like we might just be on the verge of a T-Rex-sized comeback!

The comeback of Onimusha and the hit remake of Resident Evil show that there’s a demand for updated versions of classic intellectual properties. If Dino Crisis were to make a return, it could be developed using Capcom’s latest technology, such as the REX Engine, offering realistic dinosaurs and captivating environments.

Critics often refer back to remarks made by Shinji Mikami, the mind behind Dino Crisis, from last year. He had expressed shock over the sustained enthusiasm among fans for a fresh installment in the series.

It was proposed that Monster Hunter has mainly taken over the role of action games based on dinosaurs, making a comeback of Dino Crisis less crucial at this point. For the time being, the gaming community finds themselves in anticipation.

Until Capcom provides an official comment on their trademark application, we can’t tell if this move signifies any substantial development.
