It would undeniably be a significant triumph for Marvel Studios and Disney if Captain America: Brave New World manages to surpass the $400 million mark at the global box office during its theatrical run, as Smart/Professor Hulk might put it. The movie, featuring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, seems to be faring better than The Marvels in terms of worldwide earnings, but unfortunately, Captain America 4’s financial success is yet to be established as a blockbuster. Achieving the break-even point would likely be a more feasible goal.
The film adaptation of “Brave New World” is facing a tight deadline at the box office to become profitable, and it’s unlikely that it will ever reach the billion-dollar milestone. As of now, Captain America’s fourth big-screen outing has grossed approximately $370.8 million. Reports suggest that Director Julius Onah’s latest project may have a production budget twice as high as the reported $180 million, though this remains unconfirmed. Even if Captain America 4 had a lower budget under $200 million, it would still find it challenging to recoup its costs.
The initial reported $180 million production cost doesn’t include additional expenses such as marketing and advertising costs, nor does it factor in the percentage of revenue that theaters receive. It seems likely that speculation is spreading incorrect information, since if the actual budget is indeed twice the reported figure, Marvel and Disney would undoubtedly suffer significant financial losses. To cover its costs and potentially break even, the film titled “Brave New World” needs to generate approximately $425 million in total revenue.
How Does ‘Captain America 4’s Performance Compare to the Other MCU Films?
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the unbroken three-week reign of “Captain America: Brave New World” at the box office as the top film. Yet, its reign was challenged and eventually surpassed when “Mickey 17” graced our screens. To someone casually watching, the $370.8 million earnings of “Captain America 4” might seem like a substantial sum, hinting at success for Disney and Marvel Studios. However, it’s interesting to note that only three movies within the MCU have underperformed financially compared to “Brave New World.
As a passionate cinephile, I must admit that “The Marvels” seems to be an anomaly within the illustrious Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Compared to its contemporaries, its global earnings of $199.7 million fall significantly short. For instance, the 2008 blockbuster “The Incredible Hulk,” led by Edward Norton, managed to rake in a more impressive $265.6 million. Even Chris Evans’ debut solo outing as Steve Rogers in “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011) surpassed this figure with a final worldwide haul of $370.6 million.
However, when accounting for inflation, the situation appears even more challenging for “Brave New World.” If we adjust these figures to current values, “The Incredible Hulk” ($392 million) and “The First Avenger” ($523 million) would outshine “Captain America 4” financially, making it the second-lowest grossing MCU film of all time.
Captain America: Brave New World” may end up as one of the underperformers at the 2025 box office among blockbuster contenders, and it’s not just its financial struggles that are concerning. The film failed to meet expectations both from critics and fans alike, making it the only “Captain America” movie without a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, it scored a mere 48%. Similarly, audiences were not kind to this production, which led to “Brave New World” receiving the lowest CinemaScore (B-) among all Captain America films. Given its poor reception, breaking even might not be such a catastrophic outcome after all.
