Captain America: A Fresh Start for the Marvel Cinematic Universe”
The fresh start for the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Captain America: A Fresh Start” might not be the exciting turn of events fans have been anticipating. As responses flood in following Anthony Mackie’s first appearance as Captain America on the big screen, it appears that “A Fresh Start” falls short of its name and instead delivers another routine installment in the series. Unfortunately, the Rotten Tomatoes score has plummeted, indicating that this new “Captain America” film could potentially set a dismal record for the MCU.
Currently, the film “Captain America: Brave New World” is seeing a slight fluctuation in its Rotten Tomatoes score, moving between 47% and 46%. With over 80 reviews analyzed so far, the rating has trended downwards as more critic’s opinions are shared. If it stays around this level, “Brave New World” could find itself among the less favorably received entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A score of 47% would match the second-lowest Rotten Tomatoes rating for an MCU film, currently held by “Eternals”. However, if it drops any further, it might tie with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” at 46%, or potentially even become the lowest-rated movie on the review aggregator site.
On a more optimistic note, despite what the initial assessment suggests, the overall response to the movie hasn’t been as negative as the score might imply. Critics have applauded Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Sam Wilson (Captain America) and Harrison Ford’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus Ross. However, some critics have expressed concerns that the film’s extensive reshoots may have affected its editing and pacing. Additionally, it appears that Brave New World is more of a follow-up to 2008’s The Incredible Hulk than another installment in the Captain America series. Our own Julian Roman from MovieWeb even gave the film a positive review, scoring it an above average 7 out of 10.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that “Brave New World” felt like a mosaic of its finest moments. It’s evident where some re-shoots occurred, and certain scenes don’t quite blend smoothly. However, this isn’t a deal-breaker because the narrative itself remains largely unaffected by these edits. In this story, Sam is on an inspiring journey to embody Captain America, while Ross is forced to confront the consequences of his past deeds.
Truth, honor, and justice are more than just empty phrases. Steve Rogers chose Sam as the worthy bearer of his shield, not because these words were tossed around casually.
‘Captain America’ Does Heavy Lifting for the Future of the MCU
In several aspects, the film Captain America: Brave New World serves not only as an introduction for a fresh Captain America character on the big screen but also lays the groundwork for the subsequent phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it approaches the culmination of the Multiverse Saga. With numerous movies following Avengers: Endgame, only a handful have significantly advanced the overall MCU narrative. This film squarely addresses the current state of the Avengers, making it evident that Sam Wilson will spearhead a new version of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While we don’t know exactly what this new team will entail, it’s certain that some familiar figures will be part of it.
In the movie “Brave New World,” we’re introduced to mutants in the MCU for the first time. This film also marks the debut of Adamantium, the unbreakable steel that encases the Wolverine’s bones. It’s possible that a character from the X-Men might make a quick appearance, similar to Beast’s unexpected cameo at the end of “The Marvels.” However, “Brave New World” is expected to maintain a generally realistic tone, with the exception of the Red Hulk, of course.
