In the upcoming winter of 2025, there seems to be a need for a leading figure at the box office, and it’s anticipated that Anthony Mackie’s film “Captain America: Brave New World” will step up to fill that role.
Based on initial predictions, it looks like the Marvel Studios feature is set to rake in at least $90 million or more during the Valentine’s Day/President’s Day weekend, which would put it among the highest-grossing films for that holiday. Interestingly enough, this is the same weekend that both the first Deadpool and Black Panther were released. This year, our highly anticipated all-audience event movie hits theaters on Valentine’s Day itself. As a gamer, I can hardly wait to see it!
In this upcoming Marvel film, we’re returning to traditional themes as a fresh cast steps into the limelight. Specifically, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson assumes the role of Captain America, a character previously portrayed by Chris Evans. The movie eschews science fiction elements and explores the multiverse, instead opting for a more grounded narrative. Additionally, the production budget is approximately $180 million, making it less expensive than many other Marvel productions.
Instead, the movie shares similarities with a political action thriller like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which was released in 2014 and starred Evans while introducing Mackie to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Last year at CinemaCon, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel, stated that the film would not involve aliens, alien invasions, or time travel. He also described it as a “relatively grounded action movie.
Under the direction of Julius Onah, Brave New World features Harrison Ford portraying Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, a recently elected U.S. President, who seeks to enlist Captain America for an official military role. However, before Wilson can decide on this proposition, he stumbles upon a sinister worldwide conspiracy that eventually leads to a showdown with Ross, as the president inexplicably metamorphoses into the Red Hulk.
Danny Ramirez is another actor joining the cast, playing the role of Joaquin Torres/Falcon. This talented group includes Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Rosa Salazar as well.
Marvel found itself reassessing its strategy and future plans following a string of underperforming films, culminating with The Marvels. However, the phenomenal success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which raked in over $1.3 billion worldwide during summer 2024, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, has significantly improved its current standing.
While it’s worth noting that Brave New World didn’t sail smoothly through production. Following the completion of principal photography in the spring of 2023, the film encountered a series of obstacles and required an additional 22 days of shooting in the spring of 2024 before its eventual release on Feb. 14, 2025. This was after several setbacks.
Opening with a staggering $90 million, the new release of “Brave New World” would rank fifth in President’s Day launches, following three Marvel movies – “Black Panther” ($242.2 million), “Deadpool” ($152.1 million), and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ($120.4 million) – as well as Universal’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” ($93.1 million), without considering inflation adjustments.
Disney plans to launch its most extensive promotional campaign over the following three weeks for the movie, with a strong possibility of surpassing initial estimates if it garners positive buzz among audiences.
